It would be better if the movie rentals lasted longer than 24 hours. I believe that if the rental period was extended to at least 3 days, more people would interested in renting movies from psn.

This is a problem with the movie industry not the PS Video store. Although Sony does have enough clout to introduce new Rental windows like netflix did. (Although that wasn’t a great window…..)

agreed. Rented a movie, then personal issues happened and a day later it already expired. Haven’t looked at the video store since.

This is especially important for those of us with kids, or with wives who fall asleep halfway through the movie and want to finish it the next night.

In the UK we get 48 hours to finish watching, not the 24 hours you seem to have in US.

Holy crap!? One day!? I’ve never rented before from psn, thank you sooo much for postin this. What a rip off!! The rental price is more expensive and shorter compared to normal rental. I know we are payin for convenience, but really?

Agreed, 24 hours to watch a movie you rent for either $3.99 or $5.99 is not long enough. Redbox is $.99 per day. Yes, this is more convenient but the price is just too high for watching it one time. Make it $.99 or $1.99 and I could definitely see myself swearing off Redbox for the convenience of downloading it and not having to drive the rental back to the store.

To clarify, you have two weeks to begin watching the movie after purchasing. However, you can only view it for 24 hours after you first begin playback. It’s still a rip-off though.

One day just isn’t quite enough to finish in many cases.

After the increase of rental time, Sony could remove DivX support. Please look at my shared idea.

I rented a movie from the PS store once. Took me a whole evening to download the rental. I get why it wasn’t streaming, so that I could use the DVD features. Watching it was fine, no problems there. In the end though, it’s cheaper to use RedBox of Netflix. The PS Store has become a bit antiquated before it even took off.

I agree, it makes it fairly pointless to rent on the ps3 when you can rent for roughly the same price at a movie store and have it for 5-7 days.
I’m sure some people only watch the movie once and delete it, but for people who like to watch the movie more than once, this would be a great feature.
Currently i don’t rent on the ps3 because of this, if they gave is 5-7 days i would start renting on the ps3 for sure.

This makes sense for the outrageous prices they charge.

I like this idea. I fell asleep last night watching Green Zone and good thing I don’t have anything going on after work, otherwise I’d never know how it ends.
@ Mr. Paul Ryan
They charge the sam prices for movie rentals as any rental place I’ve ever been to like Blockbuster or Hollywood video. Where can you rent SD movies for less than $4 or Blu Ray movies for less than $6?

I can safely say I’ll never rent another movie on the PS3 due to the 24 hour limit. I watched the first half of a movie the night before last, then the second half last night. However, five mins before it ended, a message came up saying my movie had expired. It even had the audacity to supply me with a link to the store so I could rent it again. I’m stunned by the fact that it doesn’t allow you to finish watching it if it is currently playing. Even if they extended the limit to 26 hours it would mean you could start watching it one night and finish watching it the next which people are unable to do at the moment.
How is it that I can get a physical copy from Redbox with all the extras etc for $1 but the bare bones digital copy is four times as much – and with crippling time restrictions? I could easily download my movies off Torrents but I choose not to as I’m happy to pay a fair price for a good service, but I feel like getting the movie I rented off a Torrent just to see the last five mins as I refuse to pay again out of principle.
Redbox only for me from now on.

Release windows are were the studios truly make money and frankly they a hesitant to start adding differing delivery vehicles that have an unknown consequence to their bottom line.
In the last few years the theatrical to video to tv windows have shortened closer and closer to the theatrical release date. When distributing a title the studio takes a huge share of the box office sales from an exhibitor like AMC. but as the title ages at the box the percent of revenue earned begins to move into the favor of the exhibitor. Studios want to get the product out to the next big revenue stream video and eventually TV as waiting too long they would then loose the positive marketing dollars spent for the theatrical release. Most of the Video sales dollars go straight back to the studio while TV revenue is based in part by how big was the opening box office for a particular title. The bigger the opening the more money the broadcasters will have to pay to spool the title on their network.

<–Continued from
No with the download and watch or streaming issue gets unwieldy for the studios is that they are unsure on how it will impact both video sales as well TV rights. If the studios would see higher profits and minimal effect on their other sales channels then expect to see every studio clamoring to flood our PS3s with titles with no restrictions. Eventually they know video will come to an end but to cannibalize their home entertainment departments for an alternative that gives them lower margins is not a fiscally prudent route.
In the meantime the Studios have devised this system to give viewers a first run movie in the marketplace but heavily restrict it so that you don't forgo buying that movie on blu-ray.
In the end digital home entertainment distribution will trump discs but it will take time and the Studios just can't afford to loose their current guaranteed streams of revenue.

With the addition of LoveFilm The ps3 rental feature seems to be a bad option. For £7.99 you can have four films a month (two at a time) delivered to your door and three hours of streamed films from their library. This is a much better option if you regularly watch films!

Tried to have a movie night, but video wouldn’t download fast enough to watch. Video expired next evening so not able to watch. Will not look at the video service on the PSN again. Needs a streaming option, for renting.

I would suggest cheaper rentals. I can rent a Bluray at Redbox for 1.50. HD rental on PSN is like 5.99. I’m sure it has to do with the film companies wanting us to buy instead of rent and they probably have more control over the price of digital distribution, but if it got to the point where my only choices were rent it for 6 bucks or buy it, then I would still buy the same amount of movies I normally would have, but I would never rent a movie again. And people would probably be more inclined to pirate movies that they don’t want to buy but that they would’ve rented were it cheaper.
