It is simple: PS3 if it is truly a Media HUB it should support MKV’s.

MKV’s already work for me, I don’t see what the problem is.

Guys, I’m sorry to destroy your dreams but PS3 will never have mkv support. And it’s not even because Sony does not want it for some reason. It’s because mkv support is pointless on a console that cannot read files > 2Gb. Yeah, you read that right. PS3 does not support NTFS or EXT partitions that allow to store big files. And even 720p mkv movie is at least 4 Gb.

no need…PS3 Media Server can do this!

Kirkpad | March 18th, 2010 at 10:27 pm
Well even if people are downloading Hollywood movies in .mkv format, it is none of Sony’s concern whether or not it was acquired legally. It’s the same thing with .mp3, .mp4, .wmv, and every other format the PS3 supports.
I don’t see a problem helping out consumers who bought the system that “does everything”.

This is really one of my most requested features. I use my PS3 everyday to watch movies on.
Most HD content nowadays is in MKV, and it should be only right if the PS3 was able to play it.

@105. True. PS3 Media Server does stream MKV’s, but wouldn’t it just be so much better to copy a MKV file to your PS3 Hard Drive and just click play. Instead of having your computer always on, and connected to the internet.
And you can forget trying to stream HD MKV’s on an older computer or slower internet connection.

I would really love if you guys added .mkv support! All of these people saying “well just stream the files” (by transcoding on the fly) must have insanely awesome computers and home networks… or they’ve just never tried to stream a file like this.
To all of you guys saying “just stream them”, you should try putting an .avi on the PS3′s hdd, and then streaming that same .avi. Mess around with both (cueing forwards and backwords actually works when it’s on the PS3′s hdd!!!) and tell me you’d rather stream something.
(I understand that it’s cool to stream media, but just transferring it over with a flash drive is extraordinarily more convinient and the playback is just so much more enjoyable when the file is on the PS3.)

@104. The PS3 hdd is FAT32, which supports files that are 4 gigs, not 2 gigs as you claim.
I promise this is true, because I just went through this last week when I had to spend a whole damn afternoon transcoding and breaking up a file (mkv, originally) just to watch a movie on my PS3. Very aggravating when there could be a very simple fix from Sony (and when compared to the extreme ease of watching formats that the console likes).

@102. Support for soft subs would be amazing!! I wonder if somebody has already made a request for this…

CsMisi | March 19th, 2010 at 4:39 am
@104 You can copy files bigger than 8GB through a media server … I have a video file of size 9.6GB right now on my PS3 internal HDD, if you want add me as a friend and I will send you a screen shot. The 4GB limit is only for the external FAT formatted HDD’s, through a media server you can copy as I said even bigger than 8GB’s if I remember correctly my record is 11GB’s in one file …
As for the PS3 Media Server: yeah it streams but if you have a slow network (as I do) you will often get from freezes and all around video slow down, and it is much more practical for me to copy to the internal HDD …
The illegality concern it is not Sony’s as long as you can get illegal content with any video file type you want, so MKV support would not harm Sony’s online move rentals neither. You can convert any MKV to PS3 compatible format in minutes, the only problem is you loose the subtitles and the secondary language files … But it is easy to get an MKV working right now on your PS3, MKV support would give us a greater freedom and more comfort and for a console that says that he is a Media Center it should do MKV by default. That’s it.

This would be amazing if possible.

KillerDante | March 19th, 2010 at 5:42 am
I wont say mkv support but total divx support which the latest one supports h264 and mkv’s
115
xabaras-414N | March 19th, 2010 at 6:22 am
I don’t think it would be too difficult to implement, since MKV is an open format too..

CreatureFear | March 19th, 2010 at 9:26 am
The reason that I have directly requested this feature from Sony is because, Even though you can convert an MKV file to a format that works on the PS3 it is a pain and as mentioned you loose features that are in the file like DTS. PMS works but you have to keep your computer on all the time.
I understand that there are two problems neither of which are that the PS3 is unable to process MKV.
1. supporting MKV may be seen as supporting piracy as admittedly i have yet to create my own videos in MKV
2.If the upgrade is given for a cost it may look as if they are validating piracy.
either way as many other post’s have mentioned this format is becoming main stream and is included in a large number of new devices I would be willing to pay a small fee $2-5 to have this feature, as opposed to purchasing another device.
to reply to the post @104 I think that what he was saying is that an external drive can only be FAT32 limiting files to 4GB

SONY be wise and put it without a vote, it’s just an option for those who want or don’t.

stormyuk | March 19th, 2010 at 12:09 pm
Hell YES 1+, it would be great to not have to convert, mess around with mkv2vob or have some transcoding going on. Native playback of MKV files is the biggest missing feature of the PS3.
124
SBrooks | March 19th, 2010 at 12:49 pm
To everyone saying PS3 Media Server already does this; well yes it does but you’re transcoding. I would prefer to use hardware that supports it natively instead of transcoding. That’s why I own a Popcorn Hour.

Electrox3d | March 19th, 2010 at 1:13 pm
I can fit like 10+ HD MKV container videos on a BD-RE disc, I’d love to be able to burn my collection off and have entire trilogies of movies in HD on one disc with access to the subtitles, different languages etc (as the MKV container supports).
Since the PS3 is an OFFICIAL DIVX Playback device, as soon as DIVX fully supports the container so will PS3 I’m assuming.

Luminaire28 | March 19th, 2010 at 3:16 pm
I’d love it if Sony added this since i have a bunch of anime that i stream from my PC that for who knows why has never been brought to the USA on dvd. Movies like Robot Carnival and Galaxy Express 999 which were both on VHS, but never dvd in this country.
129
Woozayaya | March 19th, 2010 at 3:53 pm
Well this one isn’t needed that much because mkv. files are movies with HD-quality and those are bigger than 4GB’s. Which means that you’d have to split it anyways with mkv2vob which already converts the media and splits it so that the PS3 can read it from an external HDD.
What would be great though would be if you could make the PS3 recognize NTFS and make it able to play mkv.

omega_weapon1 | March 19th, 2010 at 6:19 pm
MKV is 1 of the Best Application, and the PS3 must have this!!!

Shadowlaw7312 | March 19th, 2010 at 8:33 pm
Agreed, tired of demuxing and remuxing etc. MKV please. I read someone saying something about transferring large files like M2TS to the PS3 HDD. Use tversity to copy the file if its 10GB plus it will take a while,I normally let it copy my movies to the HDD while I’m sleep and after its done my PS3 is shut for auto shut-off. I love waking up to my HDD movies on my 500GB ps3 HDD ty Sony. But please we need MKV support.
134
Shadowlaw7312 | March 19th, 2010 at 8:35 pm
Oh yeah I’m sorry to clarify Tversity will copy via wireless network and is seen by the ps3 as a media server.

HeavyWeaponsGuy | March 19th, 2010 at 9:06 pm
It sure would be useful.

c45j | March 20th, 2010 at 1:57 am
aren’t their blu-ray players coming out that support mkv? ps3 definitely needs to support it.
137
Alucard-Zero-BR | March 20th, 2010 at 4:23 am
It can be done updating the divx for the most recent version. Wen support MKV we will need suport for internal ass and srt subtitles.
138
Kleeyook1989 | March 20th, 2010 at 4:54 am
I doubt that’d work well. MKV file crash a LOT. Not to mention about its format resolution that might need to be converted. I can’t even play my anime AVI files on PS3. Don’t know how to fix exactly.
And hell, it crashes a LOT.

anthonws | March 20th, 2010 at 10:12 am
I’m sorry but I can’t understand why people is talking about PS3 Media Server. We are talking about PS3 functions! I do not like to spend more electricity and also pay more at the end of the month (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyoto_Protocol). And, MKV is a container officially supported by DivX (http://www.divx.com/en/software/divx-plus/codec-pack/mkv)!! Including H.264 codec. Just update the PS3 DivX 3 to 7!!!!
Thank you!
144
teekomeeko | March 20th, 2010 at 12:26 pm
Even though I simply use MKV2VOB to switch formats or stream with PS3 Media Server, having it natively supported would be so awesome. It’s already a part of DivX, so I don’t see why it can’t happen, subtitle support and all.
