I have an older PS3 model and I am currently playing Indigo Prophecy (PS2) since I loved Heavy Rain. The ability to play older games is great and great for being able to experience older games. It would be nice if all PS3 models had the ability to do this. (That’s one of the reasons I am reluctant to upgrade my PS3 to a slim model!)

Please… I understand the PS2 hardware was taken out to reduce the Ps3′s costs. But shouldn’t the PS3 be more than capable of software emulation of the PS2 games??

No matter what reasons you can come up with… the Pros outweigh the Cons. People would rather be able to play ps2 games on their ps3s than not… simple fact. And if this happens, that’s one more thing to add to the Ps3 arsenal and the sales will reflect that(even in perhaps in the long run)

This would be great. Not sure why the got rid of this feature to begin with. I had it on my original PS3. I could play PS2 & PS games on there.

I love how the Wii has it to where they can buy the oldschool games too. I wouldn’t mind buying some of my favorites if the upscaled the graphics a bit to help with the HIDef tvs.

Why are you still playing PS2 games when there’s so much out for this generation?

If you want to play PS2 games, buy a PS2.

Are you still playing the first Command and Conquer on PC?

Perhaps you’re still looking for a way to play Pitfall as well. It’s one thing if you missed a generation and you’re looking to catch up, but even then, forcing a company to simulate one of their consoles that’s still on the market is just ridiculous.

I do have to say that there are a lot of people on other forums too that have voiced a desire for ps2 compatibility. Personally i would love and was surprised that the latest ps3 still wasn’t compatible(again.)

@TheL1T1G4T0R: Actually, yes I do play Pitfall. Emulated on the PS3 via Linux and an Atari 2600 emulator. I also play my old Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Atari 8-Bit and some DOS games on there. If there was decent OpenGL support on the PS3 in Linux, I’d probably be running one of the PS2 emulators that already exist, but the graphics won’t keep up. “Buy a PS2″.. I have one already. Nobody’s “forcing” Sony to do anything, just asking for that which they provided previously and for some reason removed.

Yes please! Then I could finally abandon this prone to failure 60gb and upgrade to a Slim. PS2 BC is the only reason I keep ti around.

Allowing for in-game XMB while playing ps1/2 games would be awesome as well, but I know that’s a pipe dream (at least in the p2′s case – ps1 might be possible I suppose, given you stay logged in while playing the games anyway).

And honestly, it’s better for Sony. I know people with a large back catalog of ps2 titles that go with a 360 over a ps3 simply because it’s cheaper. BC would go along way to keep people sticking with PlayStation (especially now that the price is actually comparable to the 360′s).

And it should be free, just like ps1 emulation and ps2 emulation on older systems. I’m fine paying for things that actually cost money to support, like Netflix and the rumored ability to save games via a cloud server – I’d gladly pay for that! – but things like BC and cross game voice chat, things that cost nothing to support once they are implemented via firmware, should be free.

Charging for them would be just as [DELETED] as MS charging people to play online via their own internet connection using their own 360 as a host.

You made backward compatibility a main selling point with PS2 and at the beginning with PS3 so keep it up, we have grown to expect it.

I didn’t think of it like this, but I would shell out a couple bucks if it were a premium add-on. In all rights it should be free, 60gb versions have it for free, PS2′s do BC for PS1… It should follow down the line. For as powerful as the PS3 is, there is no reason why software emulation isn’t a possibility.

I think some kind of backwards compatibility would be great. I would pay a one-time fee. (Free would be better of course) I would not pay a subscription though. I would not want to have to connect to the internet to play my ps2 games.

I would love this feature but it should definitely not be a payed premium. Look at the competitors, they provide software emulation to customers without an extra charge and that is something you need to offer.

I would pay $50-100 for this. You could release it as a software license. My launch PS3 is no more and there are PS2 games I bought for it that I still want play on my current PS3.

i dont think its needed because that’s a whole other problem for people to focus on. EVERYONE already has a ps2. it the higest sold console ever. And if by chance u dont u can buy a used one from gamestop for $60 a.k.a. the price of a new game.

I would absolutely LOVE PS2 compatibility in PS3′s (phat or slim, I know the 20 & 60, have PS2 compat). I would love to buy a PS3 just for the PS2 playback. I don’t care if the graphics of PS2 games don’t look as sharp as they should.

I have a old 80gig model, that plays old games. But would def pay 20-30 bucks to have them all work right with no issues.

And also Sony is a Multi BILLION dollar company that doesn’t have (full) backwards compatibility with their (current gen) system. Microsoft’s 360 emulates the Xbox (albeit through software emulation I think). And Nintendo has software emulation (Virtual Console) & Hardware (GameCube). . . .

You have no idea how scared to death I am of my 60 GB PS3 dying on me. PS2 backwards compatability is the reason for this fear. I actually do use this feature and pretty often (e.g., I have played Persona 3 and Okami in this very month). I can guarantee a new slim purchase for my upstairs tv to replace the PS2 I have up there now if you bring back PS3 backwards compatability.

I purchased the 80GB MGS4 PS3 bundle on launch day specifically because of its software BC. Even though the software emulation was under-supported and choppy on sections of MGS3, the console was still an excellent purchase.

That PS3 was stolen months ago on Thanksgiving, and since there was nothing on the market to replace it, I spent $350 on ebay to get a 60GB hardware emulation console.

That’s money that you could’ve had, Sony. I would much rather have paid for a new, retail console, but you don’t support it. Jack Tretton admitted that the software emulation wasn’t removed to save costs, but to encourage the sale of PS3 games (in an interview with Wall Street Journal).

The consumer base for PS3 software is much higher and more established now, so the threat of PS2 games encroaching into PS3 software is lessened. Clearly backwards compatibility is something that the majority of consumers WANT.

It would be nice, free or paid. My PS2 can’t read CD-based games anymore and I can’t even find brand-new PS2s. Let Kevin Butler get the word out and anyone on the fence about buying a PS3 will probably buy two!

I remember hearing that the EE and the Cell architecture are not too terribly different.

I really regret not getting a backward comparable ps3 when I had the chance. I’d seriously consider doing this if I were Sony.

I would be willing to pay up to $100 for a Download Add-on to enable this on the PS3. It’s basically a FREE sale for Sony in digital form instead of assembling, packaging, shipping, marketing a Retail PS2.

I already have a backwards compatible 80gb however I’ve been thinking of getting myself a Slim just cause, and adding in some way to emulate PS2 games would finalize that choice. (I could give 80gb to a friend or family) And continue my Playstation experience with the Slim.

This is something which I’ve been waiting for for a long time. My 60 GB is still going strong, but unfortunately I think it’s due for a breakdown and honestly if a new PS3 couldn’t support my catalogue of 70+ PS2 games, I’m not sure I’d get one. I’d probably go to eBay and buy myself a used 60, rather than a new console. Money that could be going into your pockets, Sony.
