Software Emulation for PS2 games

Idea 203 | Posted in , by | March 17, 2010

Even if it were a paid add-on, I’m sure many PS3 owners would be thrilled if they could play PS2 games on the system directly. While software emulation may not be perfect, it’s better than nothing!

Even though I have a BC 60-gig, I think this is absolutely necessary. I have thought about upgrading to a slim, but I like playing my PS2 games. I don’t think many people would mind paying for PS2 software emulation, really, as whatever you’d charge, it’d be cheaper than a PS2. Of course, it should be free, but if that can’t work out, as I said, I don’t think people would mind a one-time fee.

sony have already all but confirmed this for E3.

Einhander138  |  March 17th, 2010 at 7:49 pm

Absolutely unnecessary.

DLC of *any* kind should *not* be a priority at all.

please add this and i would like more backwards support for the 80gb 2007 models i feel like Sony has neglected support of the 2007 ps3 80gb models users like me

Squished  |  March 17th, 2010 at 7:55 pm

I vote Yes for PS2 emulation, or at least fix and return MY 80 GB BC PS3.

killer4you  |  March 17th, 2010 at 8:03 pm

This would be great to have, I had a 60GB ps3 an loved that feature, but i really wanted to slim ps3 so i sold 60GB ps3 an got wanted even though im bumbed about that one feature not being available other thn that I love my slim alot more.

Enforcer_X  |  March 17th, 2010 at 8:08 pm

Sony said not a lot of people wanted this … Well I think we have proved them wrong!

Hauntedpixel  |  March 17th, 2010 at 8:14 pm

I finally got around to buying another new PS2 a few weeks ago and it was actually really hard to find one. I was shocked how a lot of Gamestops and stores in general were dumping the system finally.

That being said, even with a new PS2, I’d still love the option to pop my PS2 games into my PS3 slim from time to time.

paradise132  |  March 17th, 2010 at 8:32 pm

I agreed with this idea because I have a lot of PS2 games that I want to play like Silent Hill 2 or Jak and Dexter.

rpgki  |  March 17th, 2010 at 8:39 pm

Oh yeah, plz bring the backwards compatiability, this is an awesome idea, and is not of the topic but also to bring more PS1 classic games every week, best of lucks for your future ideas

Razor210  |  March 17th, 2010 at 8:39 pm

Y’all should have bought a 60 gig.

If you want to play old games, go get a PS2 instead of spending time on this.

112

CDprofessional  |  March 17th, 2010 at 8:40 pm

I have the launch 60gb PS3 and I’ve played like 2 PS2 games on it since I’ve had the system. I dunno, I haven’t really seen b/c as all that big of a deal. It’s a cool feature but I’d rather Sony spend the time and resources on other more important features. I mean, doesn’t everyone here have a PS2 already if they REALLY need to play a PS2 game?

113

ReIysis  |  March 17th, 2010 at 8:43 pm

This is all I’ve wanted. I have an 80gb backwards compatible PS3 (that I bought with that functionality in mind). Support for it just dropped when the newer models came out. There have been no new updates for any new PS2 releases. Yes, I could buy a PS2, but I bought my BC PS3 specifically for the ability to play my PS2 games.

Honestly, if my PS3 breaks, I’m not getting a slim. I’d gladly pay a premium for a used 60 or 80gb model on eBay. This is money Sony is losing. Honestly, dropping support for newer consoles is your call, but to stop supporting a headline functionality for a console model almost immediately after its release… well, that seems like bad business.

114

bloodytaste  |  March 17th, 2010 at 8:43 pm

I have a backwards compatible PS3 and I love being able to play ps2 games on it. I’m still even buying ps2 games because of it. If my ps3 wasn’t backwards compatible I probably still wouldn’t be buying old games to help fill your pockets. :D

115

StormBrkr216  |  March 17th, 2010 at 8:43 pm

the old classics should be emulated. Not just the household names. you have classics like Otogi, altered beast, and any final fantasy that ever came out!

116

Hawt  |  March 17th, 2010 at 8:44 pm

I couldn’t believe it when my PS3 broke and I had to pay EXTRA to get a refurb of my 60gb PS3 just so I could play my PS1 and PS2 game.

Way to screw over the people who supported you in the beginning.

It’s laughable that you would take away memory card slots, PS1 and PS2 backwards compatibility and two usb ports and act like you’re doing customers a favor by offering them a gimped system that is a little smaller and has a bigger hard drive.

It just sucks that Sony’s corporate greed for sales on digital PS2 and PS1 classics on the PSN Store killed the one of coolest features of the PS3.

If this does come back I’m sure it will be part of the premium service that has been rumored to come around.

ChocoboJoseph  |  March 17th, 2010 at 8:45 pm

holy crap, yes I want ps2 backwards compatibility. Don’t care if it looks terrible at a higher resolution or if it has occasional slow down, I want backwards compatibility for my ps2 collection.

119

RIN_Beertjes  |  March 17th, 2010 at 8:49 pm

definitely want this,, first because i want to replay classics like MGS 2 and 3 again, second because the PS2 doesnthave HDMI support

120

Dratizz  |  March 17th, 2010 at 8:52 pm

I have never had the desire to play a single PS2 title. I feel like this is something that should be placed way down the list of priorities.

121

ACandJS  |  March 17th, 2010 at 8:55 pm

Sony think of it this way sales would go through the roof, if BacPac to PS2 happens. PS1 and PS2 titles combined IS the best library of games EVER. Imagine if that was one the most powerful gaming console out…This should be self-explanatory this needs to happen. It is no longer a want.

122

FPlus  |  March 17th, 2010 at 8:55 pm

Yes, I agree it should be added, even if its a PSN downloadable paid add-on… I would pay upto $30 for it so i can play Legacy Of Kain series in its entirety. And NFS HP2 and BLACK and shadow of the colossus.

123

jfkgoblue  |  March 17th, 2010 at 8:56 pm

not the most important idea on the platform(I like most already have a PS2), but it would be nice

124

NintendoTim  |  March 17th, 2010 at 8:57 pm

One of the many reasons why I still cling to my 60GB launch PS3, fretting the day it dies.

Do it, and I just might by the slim. Keyword = Might.

TrueFFVIIFan  |  March 17th, 2010 at 9:01 pm

Sony, please listen to all of us- fans! Damn it!- MAKE THIS HAPPEN. Let this becomes a REALITY FOR ALL OF US!

127

pacanug  |  March 17th, 2010 at 9:03 pm

Although something of a distant hope, I’d much rather prefer a new SKU with the inclusion of the Emotion Engine chip again.

128

ittoujuu  |  March 17th, 2010 at 9:05 pm

The PS2 has arguably the best and most diverse lineup for any console, ever, and I think allowing the PS3 to leverage the strength of that software library would be much to Sony’s advantage. Instead of holding back and waiting until there are enough titles they want already out, more PS2 owners would be enticed to upconvert by one or two games they’d really like, knowing that past favorites or unplayed games in their backlog are all compatible. There’s no trade-off, then – only gain, in the eyes of the end-user.

Because of the difference in price, I don’t see PS3 backward-compatibility cribbing sales from the PS2. Due to the difference price point, the main segment of PS2 buyers now are cost-conscious people looking for a competitively-priced game system with a large pre-existing library of inexpensive games. The PS2 isn’t going to be around forever, though, and the PS3 has a long life cycle ahead of it, so I’m definitely in the camp that would love to see a great PS2 software emulation solution on the PS3.

129

Haze_OMGWTF  |  March 17th, 2010 at 9:06 pm

yeah they have not launched this before coz the CELL work a lot different from the other cpu’s , but since they buy the company making progress on the ps2 emulation i think this is happening people! oh yeah! (still have a lot of ps2 games to play and i don’t find the legal copies anymore)

130

SUPERGAMER247  |  March 17th, 2010 at 9:08 pm

Sony has had the hardware patented since 2008 christmas to do it. All that has to be done is the graphics( they would look like puke). Besides that, we’re just locked out from playing one.

131

Zeikcied  |  March 17th, 2010 at 9:13 pm

The only problem with this is that it’s literally impossible to do without hardware, unless you alter the games via a patch (ala the 360).

See, the RAM that the PS2 GPU uses for the Framebuffer is faster than the RAM that the PS3 GPU uses. So PS2 games would need to be altered to compensate for the slower RAM. That’s why 80 Gig PS3s still had the GS chip. The Cell can emulate the Emotion Engine without much trouble, but the RSX can’t emulate the Graphics Synthesizer due to the slower RAM.

SomeoneElse  |  March 17th, 2010 at 9:13 pm

I have a 640GB PS3 (original 60GB launch console) that I use almost everyday and enjoy the fact that I can play PS2 games (like Odin Sphere) on it whenever I want. One device that plays all the Playstation games I have bought over the years :)

Of course, if the day comes when it stops working it would be nice to pick up a slim with backwards compatibility.

I still know people who are holding out for backwards compatibility. They want to buy a new PS3 with backwards compatibility…not pay more for a used one with smaller HDD.

133

Eldictator  |  March 17th, 2010 at 9:16 pm

I’ve got a tonne of ps2 games gathering dust and some ps2 games i would buy from the psn that can’t be bought in the shops

134

extreme_punisher  |  March 17th, 2010 at 9:24 pm

This would be amazing! It only does everything!

135

thatwouldbedark  |  March 17th, 2010 at 9:25 pm

I love my videogame collection but I only play my PS1 and PS3 games. Plus there’s definitely some games (like ICO) that would be great for download on the Playstation Store.

136

Syph93  |  March 17th, 2010 at 9:26 pm

If he have to compromise and pay for the ability, so be it, but at least don’t make us pay for games we already own ala the upcoming xbox arcade. Besides, you could turn it into a commercial, I mean, most people would be inclined to play PS2 games than original Xbox games

137

derekthedream  |  March 17th, 2010 at 9:28 pm

free addon would be great but i would be willing to pay for an addon that would let me play my ps2 games on my ps3

138

R9delta  |  March 17th, 2010 at 9:28 pm

“Are you still playing the first Command and Conquer on PC?”

Well I can tell you it’s sure as hell better than the 4th one.

139

Bertie_Big_Baws  |  March 17th, 2010 at 9:36 pm

I Purchased a second hand uk launch 60gb instead of a slim because of backwards compatability. PS2 emulation means more slim sales. Simple.

140

Basay  |  March 17th, 2010 at 9:36 pm

hey if your up to it i’d be willing to sell ya my 60gig model. 3 years strong and I have only upgraded to a 250gig HD. (knock on wood) I’ve never had any issues with my “black beauty.” but i’d be willing to part with it for say, like $600 bucks.

141

holy-mob  |  March 17th, 2010 at 9:39 pm

I’m not too motivated to push Sony to make the PS3 play PS2 games, especially since there are a multitude of emulators out now.

Plus, I think Sony have it in their gameplan to release PS2 games as downloadable titles like PS1 classics and the ones on XBLA.

142

Spetsnas  |  March 17th, 2010 at 9:42 pm

I would not mind paying a fee for this, however that fee should be reasonable.

143

chimpumpapascon  |  March 17th, 2010 at 9:42 pm

I WANT MY Resident Evil 4 without having to plug in my PS2 in standard def =P

144

bigdumbfatso  |  March 17th, 2010 at 9:43 pm

I would love to see PS2 support for my PS3. It would give me a reason to dust off my library of PS2 games.

145

lunarlasso  |  March 17th, 2010 at 9:44 pm

I have a buddy (less than casual gamer) that wants a ps3 for the blue ray feature (he’s a movie buff). He refuses to get it because he has so many ps2 games. Although, hardcore gamers will keep a myraid of game systems on the shelf (if we had another option we wouldn’t), casual gamers won’t.

Thank God for my 80gb (metal gear solid) fat ps3. It’s emulation but it’s something.

146

LegendaryPhoenix  |  March 17th, 2010 at 9:47 pm

I am honestly tired of all the people whining about wanting to play PS2 games on the PS3 if it really is such a HUGE issue as you all make it out to be, why didn’t you buy the system when it came out?

Price? Well, that’s all well and good but that is why they removed the ability, so you lost out and thus have no right to complain what-so-ever.

147

gamesadict89  |  March 17th, 2010 at 9:49 pm

I don’t care if the software emulation has some issues. This idea, together with the “Make PS2 games downloadable via Store” one, would make the PS3 the most powerful console ever, have the largest game library ever, and the sales would skyrocket, and I didn’t even mention the massive sales of amazing PS2 games off PSN.

148

KrylonDelta  |  March 17th, 2010 at 9:56 pm

I don’t care about trophies or cross chat. Just give us the ability to play PS2 games on our consoles!

149

kakashi422  |  March 17th, 2010 at 9:59 pm

Like i said before Better be free.

BrutusTV  |  March 17th, 2010 at 10:00 pm

I got a 250GB PS3 slim (Nov. 4, 2009) and have had a PS2 since 2003 (fat) and 2006 (slim). Got a new 32″ Bravia in January of this year and tried playing PS2 games on it. While they don’t look completely bad, I do notice the jaggies more. I don’t know if it would be any better running on my PS3 through HDMI with smoothing on but it’s worth a shot. Sony, please consider this. I’m fine with PS2 games on PSN too as long as I can play my discs on my PS3. Thanks.
