Storage of Game Saves Online

Idea 313 | Posted in , by | March 17, 2010

If we were able to keep all, copy protected saves included, online on the PSN it would make those of us who play on multiple systems happy. Plus it would offer backup in case of hard ware failure.

It was announced on March 9, 2011 that PlayStation Network’s new online storage for game saves feature will give PlayStation Plus subscribers the capability to back up game save data to the cloud. http://bit.ly/e87Zbr

I like this idea. I bought 5 games on the PS3 store and when i bought a new hard drive and switched them i lost all the game saves from them.

If I’m not mistaken I’d like to suggest the route that guys at MediaMolecule go about handling gamesaves. You are allowed to back up your game save to external media source (usb,sd,hdd, etc) but the catch is that in order for you to play that save on another system you have to have your PSN account on that system under your screen name.

For Example:
I want to go over a friend’s house to play LBP. I copy my gamesave to my usb stick and head over to his/her house. Hop on PS3, create new user account using my existing PSN account, copy my save from usb drive to PS3, I can now load up LBP and play from my original save.

Now if I tried to use that same save on another users account it will recognize that it isn’t the account the save was created from and override it with a fresh new save (prevent gamesave sharing).

One downside is it requires the PS3 to connect online and sync the account for it to work. So say I go to a friends house that doesn’t have internet then I cant use that save cause theres no way to varify me being the original creator of that gamesave.

I;d vote a million times for this… You could even tier it, X amount of data is free and you get a larger storage space by paying monthly. But if you do this please allow easy access to sign in on someone else’s ps3 to access your data! And dont limit the number of times you can sign in elsewhere, this sign in only needs to access saved games, and you can only be signed in to PSN on one ps3 at a time.

if we are to gain a new additional paid service, this would be a feature I would like within that. or at least some kind of memory card so we can transfer saves easy and only access them on our PSN.

SKILLZx5  |  March 24th, 2010 at 6:19 pm

WHY would anyone vote this down????
System failure? locked saves? yea you guessed it…you lose your save…start again from the beginning.

106

CrystalX3D  |  March 24th, 2010 at 7:42 pm

This would have to be a premium service, as there’s no way they could offer this for free. If we were to pay for it, it would have to work for locked save files as well.

I’ve requested an auto backup feature for shutdown like 10 times but it never posts. This would be fine also but a fw update that lets you backup automatically when you shutdown your ps3 would be sweet.

This is a great idea! But one thing. It should have the option to add a optional upload URL if subscriptions are needed. Which means you could setup a home ftp or have a space on a webserver and your saves would be uploaded there automatically. This would free up Sony servers and allow you to get access to them from anywhere in the world.

I think this will be good for anything relating to digital distribution. I deleted a downloadable game not realizing in order to have it back to repurchase the game again.

MrBeatdown  |  March 26th, 2010 at 6:06 pm

Or at least let us keep the HDD and not require us to reformat when putting it into a new PS3.

Anagura-Raziel  |  March 27th, 2010 at 12:39 am

This is genius!! All this time I’ve been wondering if it would be better to be able back up your saves incase someone steals your ps3 (or you move out of the flat where your flatmate owns the ps3),

OR if it would be better to stop cheaters getting what they don’t deserve.

However this solution is just perfect.

there are already ideas about network cloud storage, you people should do a search before posting ideas you know, like the own posting page encourages you to do….

kowhoho  |  March 28th, 2010 at 10:43 am

This was mentioned as a possibility in the subscription plan they are going to be rolling out.

118

crewsader06  |  March 30th, 2010 at 12:04 am

I would definitely pay for this feature because of the convenience of it. cloud backup would be awesome

119

DemBoys46290  |  March 30th, 2010 at 5:57 am

is there any word from someone at sony about this issue yet

120

xBerserker  |  April 3rd, 2010 at 12:06 pm

I voted yes, for a list of all the Locked Game Saves check out this post – http://www.ps3blog.net/2009/08/26/locked-game-saves-on-the-ps3/

Let me know of any others that are locked and I’ll updated the list.

oly1kenobi  |  April 3rd, 2010 at 10:59 pm

100% agree we need some sort of back up for the saved game files.. PS3 died and I lost soo much

122

iTasha07  |  April 6th, 2010 at 7:23 pm

I voted this up because I too have just been a victim of a corrupted HDD and I see the benefits of this feature and I would gladly pay for the service. This feature however need not even be made.

Just DON’T use copy protection, it’s not like it’s mandatory for all games so why are some applying this idiotic feature?

DaLeK_H  |  April 7th, 2010 at 7:59 am

I think this would be a great idea. It stops people from getting save datas of the internet, and if you have multiple systems in the house, you can transfer the data wherever you go. I do not mind to use my pen drive, but I think it would be a more easy way of transferring data. Sony – not that you already do, but doing this will own xbox for sure.

125

BalramRules  |  April 12th, 2010 at 10:55 am

Yeah, we should keep this a “Pay For Internet Storage” ability which saves onto your PlayStation Network Account.
Like a 8GB Sony MicroVault USB costs about hmm, $7.99, so keep it the same with the PS3 X)
1GB=99 Cents
2GB=$1.99
4GB=$3.99
8GB=$4.99 etc.

126

BalramRules  |  April 12th, 2010 at 12:19 pm

Yeah, but maybe not called PS Cloud, and we should have to pay for each of this storage, btw, you’re getting downvoted like HELL!
Coz someone already posted this idea, and got Up-Voted like CRAAAAZZZY!
Just look! XO

127

W1rbel5turm  |  April 24th, 2010 at 7:21 am

They should use the a cloud system like Steam. Its perfect… ^^
http://www.steampowered.com/steamworks/ov_cloud.php
that would be perfect

128

rougegoat  |  April 24th, 2010 at 9:00 pm

i couldn’t tell if this was meaning exclusively save on the cloud or backup saves to the cloud. as a result, i voted against it(only cloud is a bad idea) before realizing i was wrong…

my bad. :/

129

mpafilho  |  April 27th, 2010 at 10:10 am

please!! having the same problem with Assassins Creed 2 and Dragons Origins.

130

Techni  |  May 3rd, 2010 at 5:02 am

Downvoted, you dont know what cloud means.

131

Techni  |  May 3rd, 2010 at 5:02 am

“Its not called a USB stick bc u cant use your saves on your friends account”

Because that’s not allowed, to prevent trophy hacking

132

djnealb  |  May 11th, 2010 at 9:07 am

I voted up for this, but I’m fairly certain that this idea has been posted several times already.

133

NoobianGod  |  May 11th, 2010 at 1:48 pm

I know I would have liked this after my YLOD.

134

FJ1100_rider  |  May 11th, 2010 at 1:59 pm

you didn’t have to lose most of your saves — don’t you do backups to a usb drive ?
do you do regular backups of your data on your pc ? why wouldn’t you do it on a ps3 since it’s also a computer ?
smart people use a usb stick a couple of times a week to copy save data .

135

jasonw2627  |  May 11th, 2010 at 6:52 pm

I Think Sony Needs to Replace these Junk YLOD Systems They Make I bought 2 and have this issue and theres also videos all over youtube bout YLOD and Sony wont do a damn Thing. RECALL THEM

136

rougegoat  |  May 11th, 2010 at 9:43 pm

why recall them when the fail rate is 0.5%? that’s less than most other devices out there.

also, you can just pull out the HD from the old one and transfer the stuff off of it. i mean, assuming the particular brand of YLOD was not harddrive related. though really, you should have backed it up before hand anyway(which is totally possible to external harddrive or thumbdrive)

137

Pharen  |  May 12th, 2010 at 3:13 am

YLOD??? I’ve never had a problem with my PS3, what do you people do to them??

138

ImSoFlyM  |  May 14th, 2010 at 5:47 am

What sucks the most about this back up and protected saved data thing is the fact that they brought out a stupid update to take away the original ps3 “install other OS” option

and included this ridiculous “sort trophy” crap and due to the nature of this ridiculous upgrade my entire ps3 system crashed and I lost over 700 hours of game play data

i don’t know about you guys but ff13 was the longest friggin game i ever played i i struggled and played relentless hours getting my characters maxed out and getting to chapter 11 just to say “yeah i maxed out everything myself” to have it all erased due to sony being petty about crap that shouldn’t even matter to them !

139

Mwezi-Tribe  |  May 20th, 2010 at 8:19 pm

and don’t forget that you have to deal with trophies as well with this like if you want to get past that stupidly annoying spike tower in God of war 1 in the collection without getting completely frustrated but still want to get trophies for later won’t work if sharing the save file of someone else, but other than the trophy thing this would be awesome

140

SCORP1367  |  June 2nd, 2010 at 7:32 am

I was fairly upset when my ps3 died on me and I lost alomost 4 yrs of gaming save files :’(. Now I backup everything everytime I finish a game. I would love to see some form of cloud saving feature like the trophies. I’d also pay for this as a premium service as I can see this as being super expensive with amount of data needed to be saved.

141

myFuriousHawk  |  June 3rd, 2010 at 2:04 am

Since the less important data like trophy are backup online, why NOT the MOST IMPORTANT data in PS3, which is the GAME SAVES.

I LOSTALL MY GAME SAVE after my PS3 death!!!!!!!!!!!

Really want to curse SONY for not to let us backup Games Save only!!!!!!!!!!!!

142

themoderndance  |  June 5th, 2010 at 8:32 pm

Ok. Saves can be copied to a usb stick… I have two PS3s and there is an option to “copy” your saves. You can only use the save with the same PSN account, but you just log into that account on the other PS3 and you can use your saves… the “game data” is another story, I think for some games it might be a problem. I dunno how LBP works now becuase it saves your levels differently now, I dont think you can copy data from that folder, but saves, yes. I would still prefer cloud saves because it’s a pain to have to remember which PS3 you made progress on, then copy that file and move it to the other one so you don’t end up loading an older save.

143

insabby  |  June 5th, 2010 at 11:42 pm

this is a awesome idea, this will really help me as i wanna transfer all my save data, my trophies from my fat old ps3 to the new slim 250gb.

144

Nemesishunter420  |  June 7th, 2010 at 4:39 pm

Isn’t this what the rumored “cloud” was?. Good idea. I wouldn’t mind this instead of going out and buying a portable hard drive.

145

FJ1100_rider  |  June 7th, 2010 at 5:03 pm

it’s supposed to be included in psn premium
wait to see if it’s announced at E3
this wouldn’t be free because it would take some huge servers – some saves are over 1mb and there would be millions of them
trophy data is a few kb in comparison .

146

djnealb  |  June 7th, 2010 at 7:19 pm

This idea has been several times already (there’s a search function, people, use it), but yes, this is a great idea…again.

147

Eidrinho  |  June 12th, 2010 at 6:17 am

Great idea. We could use Memory Stick etc., but just storing these little files on a cloud without any more complicity would be great.

148

AriesWarlock  |  June 14th, 2010 at 9:14 pm

And in addition to that, whenver you plug in a USB stick have a menu automatically come up asking if you want to backup your save files. Useful indeed!

149

Fantatier  |  June 16th, 2010 at 3:38 am

this is a must, i play my games on 3 ps3s and its always a pain to transfer savegames from one to the other.

150

laughinman1  |  June 17th, 2010 at 5:16 am

This would be handy for any people out there who own multiple PS3s for whatever reasons.

I would love this feature. It’s a pain in that I can’t backup some locked game saves e.g. Rock Band 2
