Idea 185 | Posted in , by | March 17, 2010

Simple idea, requested : Trophies for PSP, similar to PS3 Trophies. It’ll be a find addition for the next firmware.

It would really give the PSP the edge over other handhelds, for sure

batmania15  |  March 17th, 2010 at 1:27 pm

I feel the PSP needs trophies. Have the ability to login to your network account and get trophies against that same account you use on the PS3. I feel this will be a great tool to get people to update there firmware which in turn will cut down piracy as well. I know my PSP would collect less dust if i had that incentive to complete or play that game.

LANfill  |  March 17th, 2010 at 1:27 pm

agreed! This would definitely push PSP titles!

AdmiralAlcott  |  March 17th, 2010 at 1:27 pm

Especially with Windows 7 phones having achievements, Sony should really jump on this right about now. And not only new games, but go back and add it in to old ones too. I feel like Sony doesn’t do anything software wise until Microsoft comes up and slaps them in the face…

This is the one thing missing from PSP’s that I really want. I know there are issues with hackers and cheats but these should be resolved so we can have PSP trophies.

datoupee  |  March 17th, 2010 at 1:28 pm

I’ve been hoping for trophies on the PSP for several years now. In addition to a trophy scheme how about letting you log in and see your friends as well as messages.

almighty-slayer  |  March 17th, 2010 at 1:35 pm

Sony have commented on this before.

The PSP is so hacked that people would just be able to hack trophies. That would make the entire system pointless

Nintendo451  |  March 17th, 2010 at 1:35 pm

http://psp.ign.com/articles/992/992905p1.html

Is this really an issue though? Hacked PSPs CANNOT access the PlayStation Store and PlayStation Network (not sure about multiplayer).

Just presenting sides of the issue. Personally, I don’t really see the need.

METLGEAR  |  March 17th, 2010 at 1:43 pm

Cool idea! Put the trophies accessible on our ps3 under the same section but like all the way at the bottom PSP trophies. And they should add to our PS level. Think i might play my PSP a little more if that was the case.

10

NoobianGod  |  March 17th, 2010 at 1:49 pm

This should have been done at the PSPgo launch imo. Make it so.

11

The1Weapon  |  March 17th, 2010 at 1:53 pm

@7 You are right. The PSP is too hacked and that would just go on to ruin the already set up PS3 system.

13

ZAANOS  |  March 17th, 2010 at 1:56 pm

This would sell PSPs like Pancakes.

14

Andrefpvs  |  March 17th, 2010 at 1:56 pm

Also, consider adding Trophies to Mobile Games as well (win7phone *wink wink*)

15

tdh004  |  March 17th, 2010 at 2:03 pm

I like the idea, but the problem is a lot of PSPs are rarely online. And since it’s simple to just swap a game save out and get a bunch of Trophies I think it would be a detriment to the Trophy system I love.

I like the idea, and if there was a way to make it happen so people didn’t pad their Trophies with PSP cheating I’d be all for it.

16

gamerstation151  |  March 17th, 2010 at 2:04 pm

PSP has been out too long for sony to start doing trophies for it now.

17

imajinetion  |  March 17th, 2010 at 2:04 pm

No, this can’t happen.

Simple reason: Pirates. If trophies can be cheated, it eliminates the whole purpose of trophies.

18

Daemius  |  March 17th, 2010 at 2:05 pm

I’d only like this if it were connected to my ps3 trophies, otherwise I’d rather not worry about keeping up with two trophy collections.

19

TheLonelyStoner  |  March 17th, 2010 at 2:05 pm

They’ve already said why they cant do this, the PSP has been hacked loads, people can get into the system and give themselves trophies.

20

almighty-slayer  |  March 17th, 2010 at 2:06 pm

@11

You misunderstand.

If they put trophies on the PSP (and presumably they would both add up together), and people hack the trophies, then the entire system would be unreliable.

If my Trophy total is 947 including PS3 and PSP, how do you know how many of those were legit?

21

reson8er  |  March 17th, 2010 at 2:08 pm

Sadly, they would have to start from scratch (PSP2) to be able to implement this.

22

BigPoppaChunk  |  March 17th, 2010 at 2:10 pm

1. let the users have the ability to change our user name, even if it costs 2 dollars or so.
2. how about making it so my psp can use my ps3 downloaded games like pain or ragdoll kung fu, even if it.s a controller issue let the user customize their own controls to make up for the lack of buttons on the psp.
3, a second nub for the psp how about a add on numb for the existing psp’s like a usb plug in nub.

23

ArgyleBandit  |  March 17th, 2010 at 2:12 pm

PSP Needs Trophies! I don’t care if other people hack trophies, all I care about is having a percent bar to track my level of completion.

24

dono_1994  |  March 17th, 2010 at 3:15 pm

have a seperate system for psp’s called medals. and it doesnt matter if the psp gets hacked. nothing is going to change with ur progression but whoever hacked their psp is going to look “cool” with their friends

25

DarkRecoil  |  March 17th, 2010 at 4:10 pm

i voted NO because the system would be abused by hackers & pirates.

..in fact sony already said this was the reason why PSP isnt going to get trophies.

So until sony completely eliminate piracy on psp, or release a hack-proof PSP-2, my vote will remain a big fat NO.

26

Andrefpvs  |  March 17th, 2010 at 4:40 pm

HOW ABOUT you need to be online to earn the Trophies?

Surely Sony can check for custom firmware while people are online…

I just want some PSP Trophies.

27

Jeigh  |  March 17th, 2010 at 5:01 pm

@ Andrefpvs (26)

That COULD work, but you’d then have people whining that they didn’t get a trophy they earned because they weren’t near any accessible Wi-Fi spots. Not to mention complaining about no games having trophies.

I just don’t think it’s (reasonably) possible or practical to do it with the current PSPs. The so-called “PSP2″ would be the best place to start. The original poster was right: this is a “simple” idea, at least in terms of how much thought was put into it, because the actual execution would be horrendously difficult.

28

Gutley  |  March 17th, 2010 at 5:07 pm

So what if they can be hacked. Since there is no financial gain for doing so its not a big deal if people do this. Why should I be prevented from doing something just because others can abuse the system.

29

DiscoJer  |  March 17th, 2010 at 5:36 pm

You don’t even have to have custom firmware, there was recently an action replay released for the PSP that works on all models

Andrey-C  |  March 17th, 2010 at 6:06 pm

I thought about hack-free solution for PSP trophies. It would be easier for games downloaded from the PSN, but also possible for UMD games.

It goes like this:

PSN downloaded games (Digital Distribution)

When someone purchases a trophy-enabled game from the PS Store, the PSN server stores this information. When that player tries to sync trophies, the PSN server will, first and foremost, check the purchase list of this PSN account and see if the game he got trophies on was bought there. If not, trophies won’t sync.

That means if a player downloads a game from any place other than the PS Store, he won’t be able to sync trophies because the purchase information is not present in the PS Store. It’s a server thing, it only uses what’s registered on the server end, so it’s not possible to hack via CFW (unless someone hacks the PSN server, which is very unlikely, and not even the PS3 is safe from that).

Andrey-C  |  March 17th, 2010 at 6:07 pm

UMD Games (Physical Media)

The idea is basicly the same. When you buy a trophy-enabled UMD game, it comes bundled with a code that can be reedemed in the PS Store. When you do so, you’ll download the trophy patch. Of course, CFW users could have an illegal “trophy patch” downloaded, but the point is: when you try to sync trophies, the PSN server will look for the PSN account’s download list and see if a trophy patch for that game was redeemed. If it has, than trophies sync normally. If not, trophy sync fails. Another “server end” thing, not way to hack through CFW.

The problem with this method is the fact that rented or used games would not have trophies (as the original buyer would probably redeem first). But that would probably boost sales for new games, which is a good thing for Sony and developers. It’s not like you can’t rent or buy used, it’s just an advantage that the sealed game has over the used one.

32

Andrey-C  |  March 17th, 2010 at 6:07 pm

Another problem is the fact that trophy patches for older games would only be possible for games bought in the PSN (as older UMD games weren’t originally bundled with the redeem code for trophies).

Anyway, that’s better than nothing and Sony should’ve realized by now how much Trophies/Achievements help boosting sales. Hope someone from Sony read this and think about it.

Always a pleasure to help,

Andrey C.

VivaLaCoulter  |  March 17th, 2010 at 6:25 pm

I’ve been thinking this for years.

34

skywalker6705  |  March 17th, 2010 at 6:29 pm

This should be considered whenever the PSP2 is made, but due to hacking and custom firmware there would be no way to prevent players from receiving trophies they didn’t earn. It would also not apply to any of the thousands of PSP games already released worldwide, and would require an absurd amount of effort to patch even a fraction of them.

35

scorchingkid  |  March 17th, 2010 at 6:38 pm

Here’s an idea Sony, let us have the ability to transfer a PSP game’s current trophy accomplishments to our PSN IDs.

Examples,
1. Motorstorm Arctic Edge’s 50 Badge System
2. Socom Fireteam Bravo 3′s 30 Medal System
3.(Not Offical) Modnation Racers’s Modjobs System

Then have a new update to the PSN (not a huge one) that will turn the accomplishments into the respective bronze, silver, gold, and platinum accomplishments that would show up on our PSN IDs after they are transferred.

This would be a good system to implement into the PSP and PSN, because upcoming PSP games are going to have in-game trophies, such as Modnation Racers.

I am aware of hackers going and posting their hacked save file trophies, but the PS3 also has trophy hackers.

Having in-game trophies is a great feature, but collecting them so you can show them off online would be even cooler.

36

Paradoxx  |  March 17th, 2010 at 6:42 pm

Agree, but keep the PS3 and PSP trophies separated.

37

DaWolf619  |  March 17th, 2010 at 7:38 pm

The whole, “PSP is too hacked for trophies” is ridiculous as the 360 is just as hacked and yet we still have achievements. This would be an issue if there was some kind of monetary value attached to Trophies. Seeing how there isn’t, it is a simple reward system and it, along with other PSN pieces need to be added to the PSP.
You want to sell more PSPs? Fully integrate the PSN and all it’s features, including trophies.

38

Mick939  |  March 17th, 2010 at 8:17 pm

Hacked psps can’t access psn please the psp NEEDS trophies

39

Lil_Mermaid_Girl  |  March 17th, 2010 at 8:40 pm

I’d buy a PSP for this, but otherwise I most likely never will. Trophies are fun and so t’d be nice to have a handheld with them

40

paradise132  |  March 17th, 2010 at 8:44 pm

I agree because my cousin has the psp and at level 0 on trophies. He didn’t have a Ps3.

41

MiguelAMX  |  March 17th, 2010 at 9:07 pm

Sony already said no. Trophies for PSP2 ? Yes. Trophies for PSP ? NO I dont want to waste time winning trophies if hackers out there are cheating and getting all the trophies they can get while im busting my butt off to get something that would evidentially be worthless.

42

Ehahneli-13  |  March 17th, 2010 at 9:26 pm

This should have already happened.

43

NintendoTim  |  March 17th, 2010 at 9:36 pm

One word: Hackers.

Sony even came out and said due to rampant piracy and shoddy firmware security, hackers could, quite possibly, hack the Trophy system on the PSP and artificially inflate their scores.

Paraphrasing, of course.

http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/08/sonys-lempel-you-re-not-going-to-see-trophies-on-the-psp/

44

computerkefka  |  March 17th, 2010 at 9:52 pm

This won’t happen and as of right now shouldn’t. Hacked PSP users would exploit the trophy system and it could possibly give hackers a way to hack the PS3 through the PSP trophy system.

45

mi33ke  |  March 17th, 2010 at 10:34 pm

I definitely want trophies for the psp, but sony would have to come out with a psp and say this new psp can not be hacked just like they did with the ps3. Then trophies will be on the psp. Time will tell.

46

boneyardweller89  |  March 17th, 2010 at 11:00 pm

I would love to see trophies for the PSP but Sony has already stated that they probably will not be bringing trophies to the PSP because of the possibility of hackers modifying their trophy collections.

47

NekoWingfoot  |  March 17th, 2010 at 11:21 pm

Actually, I’d like to see more than this. Look at what MS are planning to do with Xbox and Windows Phone 7: you’d be able to play the same game on both, and Achievements can be gotten both ways.

Obviously, not all games would work well on PSP, and it looks like WinPhone7 hardware will be more powerful, but still… for games like Bejeweled, Peggle, and similar, there really should be a PSP version as well as a PS3 version, and their trophies should sync with each other.

48

Techni  |  March 18th, 2010 at 12:36 am

-Sony is bringing PSN to other devices. Of all their devices that deserve it, PSP would be the biggest.

-Fearing hackers is not a reason to not do it. Trophies on PS3 have been hacked. Punishing the legitimate users to spite the ones that aren’t is not a way to make the legitimate users happy. What if Sony didn’t add other features to PSP out of fear of what hackers would do to it? Hackers broke the PS1 and PSN ISO loader DRM. What if Sony didn’t put PSP/PS1 games on the PSN out of fear the ISO loader would have been used by hackers? Everything gets hacked eventually, that’s no reason not to do anything. Even the web browser on PS3 got hacked to let people download free games for a while

-Windows Mobile 7 is getting them. Sony should be leading the pack not following it

-We’ve already seen their success on PS3. Specifically sales wise. Surely the money alone is reason enough to do it.

49

Viper_Bravo  |  March 18th, 2010 at 12:40 am

PSP Trophies would ROCK but…. The PSP is to much of a hacked system for honorable Trophies. I don’t know of the rate of hacked PSPs connected with the PSN, but it isn’t worth the risk of dishonoring the Trophy system. If the PSP2 proves to be a more tight system in terms of hack-ability, they introduce Trophies now sooner.

50

xyParadox  |  March 18th, 2010 at 1:50 am

This would be great! I didn’t think about the amount of hacked PSP’s, but if Sony can figure out a way to do it and make it like the PS3′s trophy system, I’d be all for it. I would definitely pay more attention to my PSP Games if this were to happen.
