For some reason only a few blu Ray PS3 games upscale to 1080p. Most only do 720p. Please make it to where they ALL do!

Upscaling may worsen a 720p image if the game is developed and optimized for 720.

Really? Not a good idea then i guess. However on the other console i’ve noticed all games support this and for people with larger screens, it actually does look slightly better.

Yeah upscaling just stretches the picture, it doesn’t make it better quality.

Not physically possible.

This would take a lot of extra processing power, even if they could pull it off that processing power would be better spent on the dozen extra features that could be gotten out of the same processing power.

uh. up-scaling = pixelated & distorted.

HouseMorton | March 17th, 2010 at 11:42 pm
So much disinformation out there. Upscaling is an inherently good thing. Does an upscaling DVD player make the picture worse?

I haven’t tried it, but it might already be possible if you go into your video output settings and manually tell the PS3 that the only resolution your TV accepts is 1080p.
I know back when I had a 1080i TV, 720p or 1080p games would just kick out at 1080i anyway. I don’t see why this wouldn’t work for 1080p.

Alestes | March 18th, 2010 at 4:44 am
The TV already do the upscaling, so this feature isn’t really needed.

oh man, you have no idea what you make with this opinion. all games will be very buggy and dont look good. real HD is much bedder, ofcause its ” only ” 720p

Games are developed with a specific resolution in mind for the game. Once it’s programmed, to upscale it might ruin the actual look of the game, and trying to go to a higher resolution for a game with a lower resolution almost always makes it look worse. To do it right would be a total waste of money and time.
More and more games are coming out in 1080p capability, so don’t worry about it. The earlier games were only 720p because when it was made, that was the best available option cost-wise. Now with more money flowing in, games can be made in high resolutions. Some games though, like some off the PSN for 10 bucks are not worth the investment into 1080p and 720p is sufficient.

I have several games here which upscale to 1080p, and they all look far worse on my 1080p Bravia than normal 720p games do.
Don’t get me wrong, proper full 1080p games look fantastic, but when a game is 720p and the PS3 upscales it to 1080p, it’s immediately obvious, and looks absolutely terrible.
The first game I had that did it was Rainbow Six, and I even wrote to the devs to request a patch to remove it. Other games I recall are Quantum of Solace, and I think Midnight Club did it… and more that I can’t remember off the top of my head.
In every case, the upscaled 1080p image looks worse, and I have to either put up with it, or edit my PS3 settings to tell it my TV can only handle 720p to get the better quality image.
Or at the very least, if this does improve the image for certain TVs, at least have the option in the graphics settings. Maybe along with the gamma slider, have a switch for 720p or upscaled 1080p.
Honestly, upscaled 1080p games look crap on my Bravia, especially on text, which becomes hard to read, like it has diagonal distortions running through it.
Please no forced upscaling!

this is not a good idea. it will make it look worse because the game was not made to run in this mode. and in many cases it can not be done.

You can not feel any handicap in who currently plays in 720p. But who is a 22-inch monitor connected to play, to a minimum of 3 meters to face that perfect picture. For example, say the God of War III at, which is really nice graphics, but like playing as a PC game a monitor for close-up of an older high-definition PC release game looks beautiful(hl2 whit source engine, battlefield 2, doom 3 and etc. have 1680×1050 native pixel) with her. And I think the console is not a bottleneck hardwer …
sry my bad english

canadianstryker | March 18th, 2010 at 3:25 pm
this is what makes some games look worse, if it was made 720p keep it 720p, if it was made 1080p keep it 1080p. developers know what they are doing when they make games in 720p.

MarSanMar | March 18th, 2010 at 7:11 pm
I agree, now we have a lot of TVs with 1080p.

cow1787 | March 18th, 2010 at 11:38 pm
A lot has to do with multi-platform games as well… ie: Xbox 360, since it’s the only one that doesn’t have true 1080p support.
So if a game is made for ps3, 360, and pc…it’s most likely going to be 720. If it’s a PS3 exclusive, there should be no reason why it wouldn’t be 1080. Even if it’s not an exclusive, make it 1080 anyway and have the 360 downscale it. Why should we have to suffer?

PK1973 | March 19th, 2010 at 5:30 am
It’s best to leave the scaling to the output device, tv, projector or whatever, since the upscaling logic in the device is adapted to the screens physical properties. The PS3 can’t know of alot of things that would make the upscaling be better, than if done onboard the image-device itself.
19
PK1973 | March 19th, 2010 at 5:32 am
But ofcourse, this depends on the quality of your screen-device. Make sure you get one with high quality scaling circuits when looking for a new display.

Sony should not even let such a naive proposal as this be taking up space on this website.

Lamedude | March 22nd, 2010 at 1:51 pm
Not possible on pre CECHL models that used 90nm RSX which has the broken scalar but I would hope it was fixed in the shrinks. The 360′s scalar is better than most budget TVs and likely introduces less lag. And it would fix the old HD CRTs that doesn’t support 720P issue.

The games that are 1080p dont upscale to 1080p they are made at 1080p. And like other people said it will take up processing power that can be used elsewhere.

LordOfRuin | April 1st, 2010 at 8:11 am
Upscaling may take processor resources that I’d prefer to be directed at graphical or gameplay goodness. I’d prefer that the games developer get the final say on what their product does. Besides, my panel does a very good job upscaling a 720 game to fill my 1080 screen. I’m betting yours does too!

danielsfbay | April 2nd, 2010 at 6:21 pm
My tuner doesn’t display 720, only 480, 960 and 1080. So any game I play that supports up to 720 will automatically be downscaled to 480. I may go XBox just to play games in full HD.

I have a Vizio 32″ 60hz and every one of myps3 games looks much better forced into 1080p, I hear all over forums that it doesn’t. I don’t see how people can say this, either they are blind or my TV is better. Every one of my games that are able to be forced into 1080p instead of 720p look so much better, it’s not even close.

SovietSlayer | April 12th, 2010 at 8:17 am
Most of you guys here are completely ignorant on the subject.
If we have a 1080p set then no matter what signal we send it, the image will be upscaled to 1080p. We RATHER have the PS3 upscale the image then the TV. Hell even the 360 can do this.

RocShemp | April 14th, 2010 at 10:30 pm
First off, games like CoD:MW, GTAIV, and MW2 are actually 640p and upscaled to 1080p. Even on the Xbox, most games are 720p and then upscaled to 1080p.
The PS3 has become very good at upscaling 480i and 480p content to 1080p. However, it does a poor job at upscaling 720p material to 1080p. The end result is a very soft image.
This is a nice idea but sadly not very practical.

BalramRules | April 15th, 2010 at 11:01 am
This should be made optional, but 720p is usually for multi-platform games, since lengthy games on the Xbox 360 can’t be handled and results in the RROD, for 360 consoles, so they don’t want the PS3 Version to be MUCH better otherwise no one will buy the 360 version, therefore they make the PS3 Version just as bad as the 360 version (FACT), therefore, mate, Im sorry but you can’t do much about it =1

Delvo | April 21st, 2010 at 5:35 pm
YES, especially 2K sports games (all NBA2K’s and All Pro Football). I have to disable 720 and 1080i in order to play it in 1080p. I wonder how many other games are like that?

discjockey14 | April 21st, 2010 at 10:40 pm
Here’s an idea, this is supposed to be the HD generation of gaming yet almost all games are only in 720p, they really should all be in 1080p even though 720p is HD the ps3 was advertised to be the first 1080p console yet only what 30 games are actually in 1080p?
33
Kymosabe | April 23rd, 2010 at 10:22 am
to add to my previous comment… maybe my tv is worse at upscaling so I have to rely on the ps3 upscaler? Whenever I buy a game that isn’t able to be forced into 1080p, the 720p image looks grainy and pixelated. Maybe this is because my tv is bad at upscaling? Just Cause 2 is an example of this. I’m just wondering if having a tv with a better internal upscaler would fix this problem, or if mine is even the problem.

Slayen | April 23rd, 2010 at 6:06 pm
for all the people saying it makes them look awful, this is false, the X360 does this to ALL its games, they are ALL native 1080p and they look just as good as the 720p versions, plus this would help with input lag on a 1080p TV when playing Rock Band/Guitar Hero since their games are all 720p

Rogueagent01 | April 30th, 2010 at 6:01 pm
I would rather Sony mandate games be made in 1080p/i. I didn’t buy a 1080p HD TV so I could play 720p games. Me and a friend actually talked about boycotting games that were not made in 1080 and after looking into it a little more realized we would essentially be boycotting gaming in general. I wish the game developers would take the time to make the games in 1080 and have the option to downscale it.

Every 1 doesnt have a HDTV of their own its hard enough reading 1080p text on standard TVs being that the text is small
37
TelikoFreedman | May 7th, 2010 at 3:50 pm
I’d want an option to make the game I’m playing goto its max possible setting.
Basically if a game can play at 1080p, play it at 1080p, if it only goes up to 720p, play it at 720p.
Also available in reverse. Play 1080p games in 720p instead. Then again you can just disable 1080p from the display settings for this one.
38
morrislevy | May 18th, 2010 at 2:16 pm
Not possible. The best we could get is just graphical smoothing. If the game was coded at 720p, then the best we can get out of it IS 720p. You can’t just add more detail to a game without a lot more coding.

Bad porting, lazy porting…
its the developers problem…
other times it just can’t take it…

i have to agree with JimInPT making bigger doesnt mean making the graphics look cleaner. alot of games are 720 and still look alot better than those on 1080
41
perradise | December 10th, 2010 at 10:29 pm
Your TVs native resolution probably isn’t exactly 1080 lines anyways so if you upscale, your TV is going to scale it again. Each scaling process will degrade the quality of the picture. In most cases its better to let the TV scale the picture once. Unless, your TV has a terrible upscaler (read cheaper upscaler). What you’re really asking for is for Sony to include an upscaler in the PS3 that is better than the one in your TV. I’m sure Sony would prefer just to sell you a better TV.

dyonte09 | January 1st, 2011 at 4:51 pm
Yeah, I think this is a great request becuse some games look like total crap. Unless you use the HDMI cord which works better. That’s 1080p or more, I think.

mfdestruction2a | February 1st, 2011 at 1:52 am
Blame cross-platform game development. We are being held back because of the Xbox. DAMN YOU XBOX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
44
yorck | May 17th, 2011 at 8:37 am
You should not blame cross-platform development. My XBOX 360 up-scales all games to 1080p however the PS3 outputs them at 720p. Still in comparison the 360 graphics looks better then the PS3, for example Enslaved even though they are claiming to leave 720p games at 720p resolution. Now my argument is valid,, since I own both consoles hooked with an HDMI cable to my TV with the possibility to switch between one console and another to know the resolution and the graphics differences.
The truth is that Sony did not include a hardware up-scaler in their console and preferred handling it with software. Now I’m sure that in the past the PS3 upscaled old games to 1080p with no problems and now not anymore, what happened?? no answer to this.
Now of course 720p games looks better in 720p mode, but who wants to play games on big HD screens with four black corners, after paying more then 1000 euro for it and especially if its a Sony TV!!
New games that support 720p and 1080p are still outputting in 720p mode and this really sucks. I have my TV that tells me every time I play a game what resolution the game is in, that’s why I’m aware of every single issue happening.
45
yorck | May 17th, 2011 at 8:40 am
Slayen I totally agree with you!!!
46
tranquility101 | July 11th, 2011 at 9:35 pm
Upscaling games to 1080p would cause some major performance issues.
If a game slightly lags at 720p, imagine how much it’d lag at 1080p!
There’s reasons for the resolution limitations.
47
SilentDragon180 | August 6th, 2011 at 5:29 pm
Some of you guys are just flat out stupid the XBOX 360 can upscale its games to 1080p and run fine plus it reduce input lag. SMH Ps3 fanboys do some research.
48
Gizmoi | January 31st, 2012 at 11:29 pm
If a game is in 720p there’s a good reason for it, it can handle drawing each frame at 1080p, that’s 50% more pixels it has to draw, 50% more memory needed to draw the same thing in higher resolution. If it’s meant to be in 720p, play it in 720p. You can’t have amazing graphics and in high res, you get one or the other.
49
Garylisk | February 3rd, 2012 at 4:58 am
Your TV does this… voted down. Can’t believe this has so many upvotes when the first few comments explain quite well why it doesn’t matter.

SUPERNATOR13 | April 25th, 2012 at 11:40 am
Wanh… my game is in 720p HD! It’s so blurry! Wanh! Wanh!
They need to make a TV that always displays 1080p in the top corner even when the resolution is 720p or 1080i. Then these cry babies will get the warm fuzzy feeling they’re looking for by seeing that beautiful 1080p number on their screen, and they’ll stop complaining about things they know nothing about, and about differences that are imperceptible to 99.9999% of human beings.
