I agree with this.

That should help detecting malfunctioning before the console is actually damaged. Plus, the PS3 already does that by itself in order to regulate the cooler’s speed, so all that has to be done is make that value visible.
Great idea.

I like the idea too. Anything to make my ps3 last longer =D

There’s themes out there on the web that you can download for free that will display the internal temp on the XMB background.

I think the idea is great but would have to be implemented very carefully.
Many people would believe that anything above 100°F (≈37.778°C) is too hot for the system when it is actually quite cool.
A colored orb next to the temperature, indicating its severity, would probably solve this problem. It would likely range in colors from blue, to green, yellow, orange, and finally red.
Viewing temperature would allow the user to know whether their system is placed in, or should be moved to, a setting with enough ventilation.

I’m not sure how this could be done or whether it is needed to be honest.

you want to go that far into it buy a PC and monitor that. monitoring your temp of your game console will do nothing for you unless you plan on breaking warranty or modding your system. If you fear overheating that much buy an intercooler right out of the running…

KINGSNOOPY26 | March 18th, 2010 at 6:15 pm
so the ps3 has a thermometer all of a sudden???

khamvongsa09 | March 18th, 2010 at 7:44 pm
I’m pretty sure the PS3 has some kind of hardware that monitors temperature. In fact, most computers have hardware that can detect temperature so I’m guessing that all PS3s already have this in them…
Adding to this idea..
It would be nice if we can have the option for the PS3 to give us a warning message if the PS3 gets to hot and is at risk of the hardware melting. This would prevent a lot of broken PS3s and would be a nice feature to have..
Overall, I support this idea…

@khamvongsa09
The PS3 system software actually does warn you when the system begins to overheat. It pops up in a gray box just like you would see if your friend were to log-in.
I saw it a few times before my system died (inevitable YLOD (not my fault)), though, I can’t remember what it said exactly. Just that the system was beginning to overheat and you should exit your game.

This would be pretty neat. I’m always concerned whether where I have the PS3 sitting is well-ventilated enough, and this would help me pick a spot where it can stay cool.

Darklurkr23 | March 29th, 2010 at 2:05 am
I support this fully. My PS3 YLOD’d the other night just out of the blue in the middle of a game and I have no idea why. The left always got hotter quicker then the right side, but a temperature gauge would be amazing!

Please please please!! I just reflowed my PS3 after having YLOD yesterday and am paranoid about it’s temp now. I’m going to install a temp monitor myself. But i still hope SONY adds some kind of internal monitor options.

this is one of the only good ideas in share
DO IT SONY

Tisoy_Sos | May 11th, 2010 at 7:59 pm
There is a sensor that controls the fan speed. When that thing is going crazy fast and making more noise then the game itself then you know that it’s really dusty and/or the cheap thermal grease is done for and need of replacement with say….Arctic Silver 5.
I would’ve suggested an auto shut-down when the temp gets too high. Most people would not look at temperatures within the console’s operating system.

Yeah. It would be nice to know that I maybe need to take a 5 minute break to go get some sunlight. haha. but really this should be implemented into the XMB
19
MONTY521 | July 11th, 2010 at 9:07 pm
it does auto shut down when it gets to a critical temp, i know it happened to mine. and it still works fine.

Jevie | July 12th, 2010 at 11:49 am
Would Be Nice to have such a feature as to knowing what the critical temp is and if to be able to see the system temperature we would know when reaching close to that temperature and maybe power of the ps3 so that we dont reach it rather than having the ps3 power off itself… maybe even a warning message that says close to critical temp would help inform us when the system is getting way hot. look at it this way it would help increase the health of the PS3′s rather than in the long run when the warranty is up we get the YLOD problem due to the processors heat causing them to maybe shift out of place or wtvr else could happen

Jut420 | July 20th, 2010 at 11:35 am
This would be a great feature, but is it be possible without changing something internally in the PS3?
22
daniel_puiu | July 23rd, 2010 at 8:15 am
why would you think that this is possible only by changing the software? this implies hardware upgrading for sony and for all of us a new ps3

This has been posted before.
Twice.

Nice. An easy way to extend the life of your PS3. Good idea.

HeresyProgram | July 29th, 2010 at 11:33 pm
Most modern devices with microprocessors have an emergency shut-off procedure for overheating. I’d imagine that includes PS3.

fadingshadow | July 30th, 2010 at 12:39 am
My relative’s PS3 died. He claims it was due to overheating during the recent heat wave. It just got me thinking why his PS3 didn’t shutoff to prevent damage? This is why I brought this up. To potentially help prevent this from happening to fellow PS3 owners.

Pharen | July 30th, 2010 at 1:07 am
My PS3 turns on the cooling fan that sound like a vacuum cleaner, that’s enough warning for me. But there are third party external fan sets you can use to keep your PS3 cool for longer

Good Idea! Voted UP

Also what if you’re in intense gaming session and you’re too busy to view the Temperature Tracker and next thing you know, your PS3 is fried. That’s where the PS3 Temperature Tracker comes in. If your too busy to notice, the PS3 Temperature Tracker will warn you of possible overheating and advice you to turnoff your console. It’s a small suggestion that can lead to big help for fellow PS3 owners.

ummm sorry to burst your bubble but the bad thing about this idea is that theres no thermometer in the ps3. so thats a problem. just saying.
hint : it wont happen.

greeny84 | August 10th, 2010 at 2:34 pm
@iWannaVerbUrNoun:
Of course there is a temperature sensor in the PS3, how do you think the fan speed control works?

Nemesishunter420 | September 28th, 2010 at 2:41 pm
Yes, this idea has to get though to Sony. It would save alot of sytems. Would have saved mine….

37
feszy | January 4th, 2011 at 11:32 pm
If it is possible there is simply no reason why this shouldn’t be included.

It would be very beneficial to the end user to be able to view their PS3′s current temperature.
I vote “Yes.”
