Allow videos to have access to and display external subtitle files (ie. .srt .sub files) I have a lot of movies I would like to watch using the PS3, but can’t because the subtitles don’t display.

if the ps3 can read the type of format that is being use.
well yeah, ps3 can recognize those stuff when you play a dvd.
but when it comes to individual file? i think is not gonna work. i think it’s possible but its gonna take alot of work.

I’ve used PS3 Media Server to stream my .mkv files, but it really struggles with stylized subs, especially if the video is encoded at a high bitrate.
So yes, native support for .mkv files please.

I have a family member who is deaf and I create subtitles for home videos (ie. His birthday party). Unfortunately he cannot watch our home videos on the PS3 because I cannot use the seperate .srt files I have made up for our videos.

I use PS3 media server for OSX and for the life of me I can never get subs files to show up. I got it working once or twice, but sub support seems to be spotty at best.
Maybe my settings are off or something.

There’s tons of ways to get subtitles on PS3 for video files, PS3 Media Server is by far the easiest (if your PC and network can handle it).
But the PS3 can also read subtitles in a divx file, look up the tutorials for it.
Ofcourse SRT support for xvid/x264 would be best.

As much as I want them, I doubt we’ll get .srt and .sub file support any time soon. Most of the time they come with films that are downloaded via torrent trackers and considering Sony is also part of the film industry… it might be a little fishy.
Then again, there are cases like Kirkpad’s in which Sony could be understanding.
If we do end up getting subtitle support, I’ll be able to get rid of my Western Digital HDTV Media Player and just hook my 1TB external hard drive to my PS3.

Outcelgeist, you do realize that the vast majority of movies using the DIVX/XVID codec are pirated, right? Despite this, Sony still supports playing those formats because there IS a demand for it, and there ARE people out there that rip their DVD collections to that format. This would just add to the ability to watch your DVD collection without needing to pop in an actual disc if you wand subtitles.

I know, I keep forgetting that the PS3 has DIVX support.
I guess we’ll see.

SRT-support, now!
programs like PS3 Mediaserver or AviAddXSubs are just not practical. I just want to connect my external USB HDD to my PS3 and watch some movies without having to convert them manually…

I totally agree with swimon. I just want to conect my external disk and play directly, no fuss, no hassles. The hardware is there, please create proper software.
thks in advance!

for pirated videos it isn’t likely . for those you create yourself you have options – either do hard subs and forget about a subtitle file extension – or put on dvd with optional subtitles – the software to do either one is available .

It would be nice to have also options to edit the subtitles, such as sync, size and color, increase or decrease the duration of each speech etc.

C’mon Sony, any media player can do that…Even your DVD players can do that…
At least give us a reason not to hope this feature will ever exist!
