Why is this voted down so much? I think it’s a good idea.

Probably because of the logistics. Games on PS3 need to pay royalties, need a dev kit, etc.
Flash games would be much improved with the browser being improved, so just vote for the better browser suggestion.

no idea why it’s voted down, could see some great cheap games made.

because of the strong association between homebrew and piracy

It would cost money. Just to get an ESRB rating alone sets a game to $2.99.

Aren’t the minis already as close to this as you’re going to get, given the reasons mentioned by keyrat?

The 360 does it already.

I’m all for this. Anything that enables and empowers indie developers to create content benefits games and the industry as a whole. It sucks that PS3 is such a closed platform and has such a high barrier of entry for developers. 360 has XNA so why cant PS3 have some form of homebrew initiative.

voted down so much because this idea would expose the system to bad programming from obscure sources and liability issues from copy protected content . The closed platform nature is what makes it safe .

Voted down because in the context of Sony, Homebrew is synonymous with illegally changing the system settings! I’m actually surprised that Sony let this through with that kind of language.
That said, I do like the idea of seeing more indie games on the PSN.

Homebrew seems cool and all, but it’s FREAKING ILLEGAL, you would have hackers on the loose and the PSP would never have a “clean” online ever again. Homebrew would bring illegal backups and ROMs and system failures. This would be PlayStation’s Virtual Genocide. Homebrew could be used safely, but there is always someone who has the stupidity to make the first step of corrupting an entire network. Homebrew would be cool, but there’s always people who take too much advantage of it.
