Allow marking similar ideas with cross links. Eg http://tinyurl.com/yzkx6ht and http://tinyurl.com/yh3ykrm are similar. So that people can vote on both or so that duplicate ideas can be weeded out.

I agree and if necessary merge them together because I have put forth suggestions that were “supposed” to be similar but were in fact completely different and they just get rejected

I agree with Craazy about merging. The idea is what’s important, not the person. Then we could realize what ideas are more popular, not just this post of this idea.

Maybe they could merge the ideas and add the votes together too…
Of course, users would be happier if this increased the total score rather than decreased it.

Merging is definitely important. It makes life better for everyone. Both us in the community and the devs will have an easier time finding ideas that are worth supporting.
Not sure about how to handle the votes. As sometimes the duplicate idea may have been down voted because it was a duplicate not because it was a bad idea.
