Allow us to access the XMB at any time – while watching videos, browsing the PlayStation Store, or even playing PS1 titles. XMB access while playing PS2 games would obviously be exempt from this.

I understand where he’s coming from. There’s times where I’m having a conversation, but one of us can’t reply because we’re in the PS store or watching a blu-ray.

COMBATCSOLDIER | April 4th, 2010 at 12:03 pm
agreed and thumbs up. Very useful.

mrfight67 | April 4th, 2010 at 12:14 pm
Would be very useful. And why do videos pause when you click the ps button? They didn’t use to, and i could message friends without interrupting my movie (Think it was stopped in 2.5)

Jumplion | April 4th, 2010 at 3:31 pm
I like this idea, no reason why you can’t at least access the XMB in certain areas like the PSN store or during videos.

idontrockirap | April 4th, 2010 at 7:35 pm
i voted yes, but makingmusic is still a nub

Here’s more along the lines of what I would’ve said had they given me more room for the comment:
We stay logged in while watching videos, accessing the store, and playing PS1 games (both downloadable and via disc), so why can’t we access the XMB at these times? We can still receive messages and whatnot, and it’s annoying having to stop whatever you’re doing to respond, or having to stop to see if a friend who just logged on wants to play something, etc.
Making XMB access more universal would go a long way towards making the PSN experience more cohesive overall.

Heck yeah! It’s bothersome if while watching a movie, I have to exit out of it just to be able to access the XMB. I absolutely second this idea.

Lightning_24 | April 4th, 2010 at 8:21 pm
I think it would be a good feature.
12
bugrimmar | April 4th, 2010 at 9:20 pm
bugrimmar > makingmusic.
but yes, it’s a good idea. it’s annoying having to exit the store just to get back on xmb to read a message.

Interesting.. I voted it down just because.. =)
lol jk

sabe-star_01 | April 4th, 2010 at 11:49 pm
Lol, vg chartz domination.
I def. agree with your idea, would be really helpful to have XMB access while watching a film.
15
makingmusic | April 4th, 2010 at 11:56 pm
Just to clear up a bit, by videos I primarily meant movies. Both DVD and Blu-ray playback prevent you from accessing the XMB.
16
makingmusic | April 4th, 2010 at 11:59 pm
Well, really disc based media I suppose. Movies, TV shows, anime, etc.

SoulSamurai | April 5th, 2010 at 1:50 am
what the hell man….you don’t have pupuse…i love pupuse..
oh well I’ll still vote it up i guess if you add pupuse. ALSO MAKE SURE YOU CAN MESSAGE FRIENDS WHILE GAME UPDATES DOWNLOAD.

I think this was suggested somewhere else at least once, just not worded this way. To be honest, I’d rather have XMB access at all times, with no restrictions. The fact that it can be done with PS3 games, which obviously takes up the most system power relative to anything else, means the system can handle XMB access for ANY content.
Bring it on.

i always Play PS1 games so this would be very useful to me, countless times i wanted to stop/start a download while playing a PS1 game but i couldn’t.

COMBATCSOLDIER | April 5th, 2010 at 5:22 am
I really love this idea. Sony should very much incorperate this immediately.

BOB8489 | April 5th, 2010 at 11:05 am
Yeah i like the idea and we should be able to access the XMB
while playing ps2 games if you have an older ps3

ActiveSparkles | April 5th, 2010 at 11:10 am
would like to stay signed in to psn while watching DVDs.
might be a valid reason this isnt an option.
just saying I would like it.

“XMB access while playing PS2 games would obviously be exempt from this.”
Why? I want it in PS2 games as well. And Bluray.
24
makingmusic | April 5th, 2010 at 2:25 pm
@SukiNihon:
Because when playing ps2 games it disconnects you from PSN altogether, and actually even disconnects your controller while it transitions over to ps2 hardware to enable ps2 playback.
Until ps2 BC is emulated via software, I don’t think access to the XMB is feasible, and certainly not worth it for the small percentage of people that have ps3s that can play ps2 games. Even when it is eventually emulated via software, I’m not sure if the ps3 could handle both emulation and full XMB access (many claim it can’t even handle emulation itself!).
I want XMB access during as many functions as possible, and I think ps2 playback would be the one time I wouldn’t mind or could understand why they can’t do it. I simply pointed out to whoever’s reading these things that the XMB should be more universal, even if it can’t be done at all times.

I think this functionality is key to a better experience with the PS3. Less hassle, more flexibility and confort. These characteristics might sound secondary, but to truly capture a gamer’s heart, they are essential.
Voted up and fully support the idea.

I think the ps3′s big issue at launch was that it wasn’t so much a platform that could do many things (like Windows or something), but rather it was a bunch of different hardware that could do different things thrown together to make a platform. The software behind it all felt rather disjointed, doing barely enough to tie all the features together.
The XMB is the centerpiece of the ps3, and it’s odd that you can’t access the XMB at all times, like you can access your desktop at any time while on a PC or MAC. All new programs that have been added post in-game XMB have allowed you to access the XMB while in-use (Life with PlayStation, Home, etc.), and it’s only some of the features that were there at launch (DVD/Blu-ray playback, ps1 games) that still feel separate from the whole PS3 package.

agreed. i hate having to quit playing a playstation one classic such as FF8 and then quit only because i cannot access my message unless i quit to the XMB. definitly a thumbs up!
please Sony please add this feature as alot of people really consider this a necessity

37
Crypt-Raider | May 5th, 2010 at 4:46 pm
yes we need XMB at all times to chat or whatever.

sickmaniac9 | May 5th, 2010 at 6:02 pm
Not being able to reply to a message while playing a PS1 game is VERY annoying. This problem reminds me of the PS3 before firmware 2.40, a time where sales of the PS3 were tiny ,mainly due to, IMO,the lack of In-game XMB.
In-game XMB is already featured for Japanese TurboGrafx games. I’d like to know why it isn’t available for PS1 games.

really i just want to be able to answer messages while my videos are still playing. i dont know why they disabled the function instead of just making it an option.

We had this to some degree and then they took it away! I used to be able to browse thought my music while listening to a song., That way I could pick the next song I was in the mood for. NOW WE CAN’T EVEN ACCESS XMB WITHOUT STOPPING MUSIC PLAYBACK!!! WTH?

WoshJills | August 12th, 2010 at 4:45 pm
True story: I bought Rayman 2 off the PlayStation Store.
1.) Someone sent me a message while I was in the Store and I couldn’t read it.
2.) Then someone sent me a message as I was playing Rayman 2, and I couldn’t read it.
Without having access to the XMB at all times it becomes less of a convenience and more of a nuance.

SukiNihon | August 23rd, 2010 at 3:48 am
@24: Then have it not disconnect you. Problem solved. We should be on PSN at all times too

steventoo101 | August 28th, 2010 at 1:46 pm
Yes! We used to be able to browse our music during playback, but now we have to completely stop playback in order to browse. Please bring this back!!

I like this idea because I have several PS1 games, and although it is handy to have options like “View Game Manual” or to be able to reassign controllers and change discs from this specialized menu, I kind of wish it would just become its own section of the XMB while you were playing the game. That way the options are there, but if I want to message a friend or do something else in the XMB, I can do so without closing the game altogether.

I would very much like to have the time when bringing up the XMB in a PS2 game… it currently shows; exit game, assign slots, controller, etc… but it doesn’t have the time and date.
