Close current window / Rework browser ergonomy

Idea 17294 | Posted in , by | May 7, 2010

Browsing web with PS3 is not very ergonomic. On PC having several pages is common. Put “Close current window” in triangle menu, circle=close window prompt, long circle=quit prompt, L/R1=switch page

maybe just scrap the current browser complete and work with firefox or whatever on creating a ps3 version that actually works ?
I actually don’t mind the current browsers method of just going to any page you want closed with r1/l1 and holding circle to close it . it’s fast and easy .

I voted up , however they need an over all rework of the browser to catchup with current web technology , flash in particular .

I know it would be better to put mozilla or some other famous one, because of the compatibility & support of different contents. but this is the object of another idea. This idea try to focus on how to use your browser with paddle.

Whatever browser we have, we need a great ergonomy to use it with paddle. Today’s way to use it is so-so for some parts, like the need to push L/R3 to zoom out first, then triangle button, then close window.
As far as i know when you are focus on a page triangle button propose you “Quit” and circle button do the same.
It’s not really the way we browse on PC, switching between our tabs, spreading our ideas from link to link without the need to wait. leading to many pages at the same time in the browser.
In games when you need to go through the huge quantity of pages there are some common ways to do so. To remain intuitive the browser ergonomy should be reworked like a game.
Few games ergonomy have been said poor, most of the time, it’s easy to use even without read the manual, sticking to some rules. PS3 browser (or mozilla) should have the same controls

Or at least give the choice to the user, PC mode when using mouse + keyboard, Game mode when using paddle, Move mode.

BOOOO thumbs down.. they already have this and if you have a keyboard and mouse even better.

@combatsoldier

i don’t know what you’re talking about. they already have what? when you go to triangle menu you’ll have only “quit” that actually quit the browser! when i only want to close the current window!
To close a window you have to make extra manipulations with L/R3 to finally have a new triangle menu with only “close window”
It’s a big trek just to close a window! it’s totally not handy!
As for the mouse and keyboard yes i would be better of course, but i refuse to have cables in the pathway between my TV and my sofa, and also don’t want to use wireless things, because of battery. Thus if i want to have a keyboard mouse experience i prefer my computer.
PS3, if it’s done well could make us browse in comfort in a different way than computer. Such small improvements are part of it.

God Bless you man, seriously I was being an ass and you were really trying to make a point. I just simply need to be nicer here. Great idea and if I could give thumbs up I would.

What is your primary language. I personally speak three languages and live on an island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean far away from people since the War.

Also feel free to send me a friend request on psn. I will accept it.

So which buttons do you suggest for back/forward?
And why should you switch the mode for close window / close application?

(a wireless keyboard/mouse with 3 years battery is around $20-$30).

@billyboy2

well you got one point, but do you really use back/forward often? most of the time it doesn’t work because webpage are dynamic, so you need to repost all the data sothat the remote server recompute the webpage.
if it’s really that important for some, i guess the best way to solve the problem is to give possibility to the user to setup his own keys.
For the circle button effect, in games it mean cancel, and when you canceled the last open thing, it means quit. With the browser it means quit from the 1st button, even if you have 10 pages opened. it’s too strong effect, you more likely want to close a window than quit the browser so, simple push should close window and long push could quit.
Like PSP, normal close button put in sleep mode, long close button shut down.
(For the keyboard like i said, if i browse on PS3 rather than PC it’s for convenient times, so it’s not to have very professional desk, if i want this PC is better) still that when using pad we need some rework.

Omg.

This feature is already implemented.

Holding down X on a link opens it in a new window.

Holding down O will close the current window being viewed without a menu.

R2 will take you to the next window, while L2 will take you back a window, as long as you aren’t zoomed in.

L1 will take you back a page, while R1 will take you forward a page if you aren’t on the latest page.

@Iyashii, real? if you’re right that’s good start, i’m gonna try it! if it’s like you say, then the only wish i remain is to exchange the long push O with the short push O. and automatic quit prompt if you “short close” the last window.
It looks like it’s in the online manual o_O so it should work! why didn’t they put it in the triangle menu as well! nowadays people don’t read documentations anymore, everything should be onscreen to guide you.
I think i’m not the only one to discover this feature thanks to share it ^_^!
Wich means that PS3 browser really have some issues with ergonomics or more people would have discovered it since long time…

Awesome idea because GOOGLE DOCS DOESN’T WORK or GOOGLE MAPS,GOOGLE EARTH, E-MAIL. Anything you try with the browser is still 99% pointless. For the record my laptop died when it met my ps3. So I’m stuck relying on Sony for the “everything” it supposedly does. Some basic things can be done but u will spend hours going through websites ’til u find one with a working flash video/link/buttons. Wikipedia is now useless, the main content area has thick white bars vertically over it. Youtube has always been half-assed:no mail, uploading or settings, no plalists or favourites. I MISS WHEN PLAYSTATION.COM WORKED. I CAN’T USE THE FORUMS ANYMORE ON MY PS3. SONY FRAGMENTED A FRAGMENTED COMMUNITY.
BECAUSE THE NETFRONT BROWSER IS SO OLDSCHOOL I CAN’T LEARN ABOUT WHAT I ALREADY OWN, NEVERMIND WHAT LIES AHEAD

all you have to do is hold X on a link to open a new window and hold O to close the current window. you press R2 and L2 to switch windows and if you click L3 it displays all the windows you can choose…but the browser definitely needs alot of work…im with everyone on saying mozilla or google should make a new one…one that we can update ourselves with java and flash and other apps..thatd be nice.

The browser interface really needs an overhaul. Why isn’t there a global preference for Flash plug-in like on the PSP?
