your title doesn’t say it all what are you talking about. Did your blueray drive stop working? Send your ps3 in to be fixed.

FJ1100_rider  |  May 7th, 2010 at 3:08 pm

how could it work ?

without the software to run ps3 games you wouldn’t be able to use it . it would basically have to be a ps3 without the hdd and would cost at least $200 or more to buy .
I can’t see why you’d buy a replacement drive that’s external and hook it to a broken ps3 – and expect that to be more cost effective than a repair or new system overall .
sony isn’t going to allow an external drive to run games without the security of the ps3 os preventing hackers from exploiting it somehow and they wouldn’t allow it to just be able to run ps3 discs through a usb port .

Hey CombatSoldier. I don’t really understand your idea.

Can you give a few more details to clarify it before the dreaded downvoters all start clicking

4

SableRage  |  May 7th, 2010 at 3:30 pm

the title doesnt explain all. how would it play, what about the cell processor, what are you thinking?

5

Whois_John_Galt  |  May 7th, 2010 at 4:04 pm

Games are built around the console’s hardware. All a blu-ray player could do is read the data, not run the game. If people refuse to buy a console then they can’t play it’s games.

6

COMBATCSOLDIER  |  May 7th, 2010 at 4:35 pm

I originally made this idea over a week ago as a joke to spite the people that refuse to upgrade to a ps3 or people complaining about there fat ps3. I had a fat ps3

However that was what sparked the idea. However I was just talking about a simple drive that simply plays the game at there lowest settings so people would stop complaining about there ps2′s.

That is all and I did not think this idea would get approved however I was thinking of a price tag around 150 to 200 bucks. So pretty much a stripped down ps3 game player without a big drive, or blu ray movie function. Just so people would stop whining.

7

COMBATCSOLDIER  |  May 7th, 2010 at 4:53 pm

And ofcoarse it would be hooked up via cable to your ps2. Similar to the way psp plugs into ps3

8

Whois_John_Galt  |  May 7th, 2010 at 6:45 pm

I don’t think you get what we’re saying. The price comes from the processors and blu-ray player. You can’t use lesser equipment and “run the game at their lowest setting” because the games don’t have graphical settings. They’re built to use standard hardware. Also, the blu-ray player plays blu-ray discs regardless if they’re movies or games so you can’t remove the movie player to lower the price.

And what did you mean by plugging into a PS2?

9

COMBATCSOLDIER  |  May 7th, 2010 at 7:45 pm

well I guess it was just a bad idea. We learn from trial and error. This was an error on my part I suppose.

10

inVanity  |  May 8th, 2010 at 10:28 am

You’d have to buy Bluetooth, the Cell Processor, the RSX Synthesizer and a Hard Drive to go with it.

How did this idea even go through?

11

COMBATCSOLDIER  |  May 8th, 2010 at 10:37 am

@10

shut the hell up. There is always a way. and there are plenty worse ideas then this. How about you blow me and leave your negative comments to other forums.

You would not have to buy a blutooth you moron, or a cell processor. You have no clue what your talking about so once again open your mouth and swallow my cum.

12

COMBATCSOLDIER  |  May 8th, 2010 at 10:38 am

this could work for certain games with a 150 dollar stripped down blu ray player to play games. It is possible asses.

13

bitcloudrzr  |  May 8th, 2010 at 11:25 am

No, stupid idea, you have no idea what you are talking about. Yes there are worse ideas, thanks for adding one more.

14

COMBATCSOLDIER  |  May 8th, 2010 at 12:48 pm

@13, like your adding anything constructive. I have three pages and most of my ideas are completely positive thumbs up. so bbbbaaa blow me honkey.

15

dr_DOOM69  |  May 8th, 2010 at 6:59 pm

ummm a usb bluray for when your laser stops working sounds much better.

16

ughughugh  |  May 10th, 2010 at 8:31 pm

liking the idea brother. i dont care for those worthless features since it cant play ps2 games. i’ll get one of these if it can connect to my pc.

17

ughughugh  |  May 10th, 2010 at 8:32 pm

+1 from me ^| (up arrow btw)

MicroNik  |  May 16th, 2010 at 10:32 am

Ps2 doesnt have enough RAM or any other hardware to run a PS3 game…

20

COMBATCSOLDIER  |  May 16th, 2010 at 11:53 am

@19 thats why you buy this external hardware. wow its amazing.

21

Detsuki-G  |  May 16th, 2010 at 9:06 pm

1) Yes you do need a cell processor and RSX. PS3 games are designed to run on those cheaps and 512MB of divided memory.

2) Yes, you would need blu-tooth because that’s PS3 controllers use to connect to the system.

3) PS3 games aren’t developed with different settings unless you’re talking resolution…

4) Yes, you do need a HDD. The games are programmed to save onto one, some games need it for installs and external HDD wouldn’t support the speeds required. Also, forgetting the games that need updates. That data downloaded from game updates is saved on the PS3 HDD.

5) You can’t take away bluray play back without taking away every PS3 game because Bluray disc is the optical format for PS3 games

If a PS3 is missing any one of these:

HDD
Bluetooth
Cell Processor
RSX
Blu-ray drive

then it’s not a PS3…

AssassinHD  |  May 20th, 2010 at 7:01 am

What a waste of internet space. You can’t play a PS3 game on a PS2 by just slapping an external drive on it. PS3 games are programmed for the Cell architecture and RSX GRU.

24

terrasnet  |  May 28th, 2010 at 1:17 am

and old usb 1.0 can with all data from your blueray external drive? and power suply?

Bro..chill with the insults and abusive language. He may not know what he’s talking about, but you could tell him a little bit nicer :)
#10 Wasn’t trying to be mean, although the “how did this idea even go through” remark was a little inappropiate.
@ #13 Superstrokey1123 #22 bitcloudrzr #23 AssassinHD
Just because you don’t agree with an idea doesn’t make it stupid. If thats all you have to say about an idea, then dont post it as a comment, just hit the vote down arrow and move on.
@#26 hadibadran10
Completely inappopriate!

Here’s an idea: PS.Blog Share needs new moderators so stupid/impossible ideas don’t pass through.

“ya just hook up a blue ray with a cable and it will work”

wtf

seriously grow up. There are plenty of ideas good and bad. I have nearly 40 ideas and more then half of them are in the positive. So I post a bad idea. I get it but there is no need to insult people.

I learned this the hard way and since this idea has posted I have learn to take my own advice. So I already have apologized for the things I have said but you really need to be the one to grow up now.

31

Focker420  |  July 15th, 2010 at 8:08 pm

Its really sad that this even went tnrough. I’ve had plenty of good ideas but none of them make it. Yet somehow this does?? Just go out and buy a PS3. You aren’t gonna find a blu-ray player for much less than a PS3. An external blu-ray player is still a blu-ray player , quite expensive.

32

Focker420  |  July 15th, 2010 at 8:10 pm

On a side note, why do you refuse to buy a new console??

33

COMBATCSOLDIER  |  July 16th, 2010 at 2:01 pm

32.
I have all the new console. However I a lot of people that refuse to buy one. This was just an idea to kind of push but meet somewhere in the middle with the people that dont. However let me clearly state, I have all major consoles.

34

ragingdrunk  |  July 16th, 2010 at 3:47 pm

Probably the worst idea I’ve seen on here. Not only would the PS2 probably not be powerful enough to decode blu-ray movies, it would be outputting them in standard def so that would defeat the whole purpose of buying said player

35

COMBATCSOLDIER  |  July 16th, 2010 at 5:39 pm

34.

Obviously you havent seen many other ideas on here. This is the far from the worst. however it is not a good one.

36

RXFireball  |  July 17th, 2010 at 5:42 pm

@35 If this is such a bad idea why are you so vehemently (and rudely, tsk) defending it? Especially why people post completely valid reasons why it is NOT POSSIBLE.
I’m beginning to think you started this idea just to begin a flame war.

This is the #1 problem I have with PlayStation.Blog Share.
People don’t research or even try to think if an idea is feasible, let alone possible. Learn about the hardware, learn about the system, THEN berate people for being stupid.

As far as your post #30… you’re the only person I see insulting anyone, so perhaps YOU should grow up and not take it so hard when completely LEGITIMATE and REASONABLE criticism inevitably rear their heads.

37

Gamewizard71  |  July 17th, 2010 at 8:17 pm

okay this would be nice but would be expensive as buying a new ps3 slim if your disc player breaks

38

nargs_au  |  July 20th, 2010 at 7:43 pm

i find this entire thread funny..
combatsoldier you need to realize that most people don’t read all the comment before commenting. they ain’t out to get you. they are just saying there say.

oh and please learn more about console hardware :)

39

Sarno1605  |  July 23rd, 2010 at 2:39 pm

The amount of negative votes says it ALL!

40

COMBATCSOLDIER  |  July 29th, 2010 at 6:54 pm

39.

Your a genious. Did you think of that insult all by yourself. This is obviously an old idea so grow up kid.

LOL. See now thats funny and true.

43

Jakintosh  |  August 14th, 2010 at 1:29 pm

Hey dude, they already make these. The cool thing is its wireless and you don’t even have to plug it into a PS2. Its called a PS3.

44

COMBATCSOLDIER  |  August 15th, 2010 at 11:06 am

hey dude, do you feel clever and witty for making such a smart comment. Congrats and thanks for your 2 cents, but the fact is that its not even worth a penny. Have a nice day bub.

45

swordzmanp236  |  August 15th, 2010 at 3:44 pm

Not very smart, A modern BD player would not suit the PS2 at all. Only the fat models (no longer in production) would meet the requirements for BD 2.0 if the rest of the hardware were up to it, which it isn’t

HDCP path? NO! The GS chip is comparable to something in the NVIDIA GeForce 2 series. HD was but a glimmer here in the States as well as in Europe.

As to other specs, let’s see: 300 MHz EE chip? Nope, too slow. That might’ve been all right in 2000, when such beasts were commonplace as Pentium II’s or PPC750′s. The RAM? Yes, it’s fast, being 800 MT/s RDRAM. You have 32MB of it, which apparently passes muster.

Mandatory Ethernet? Got that on all models.
1 GB storage? No space for that.
Secondary audio codec? Negative.
Secondary video codec? That’s a scratch, too.

Get real. You want a player for BD, then you get a standalone to complement the PS2 in your home. It will not make a quality add-on.

saintaqua  |  August 25th, 2010 at 2:05 pm

People who want to keep playing PS2, Wii and 360 don’t have any reason to complain that PS3 is more powerful with Bluray.

47

mjc0961  |  August 28th, 2010 at 9:05 pm

You think you can just plug a blu-ray drive into the PS2′s USB slot and have a PS3? NO. You’d still be lacking the PS3 hardware, the stuff that actually makes the game. Trying to play PS3 games on a PS2 would be like trying to play a high end PC game on an old Windows 3.1 machine. It just isn’t going to work even if you do get an optical drive that will read the disc the game is on.

Also you shouldn’t really go around flaming people like you did in #11, especially when you’re so horribly wrong.

48

Radium322  |  August 29th, 2010 at 7:04 pm

No offense, but clearly you don’t understand technology.

1) PS3 runs a different operating system, so think of it like running a windows game on a mac. Doesnt work.
2) PS3 Games (as stated before) don’t have graphical settings, i.e. you cant run them at lower resolution because there is no way to adjust the resolution.
3) The processors are completely different, and the ps2 processor is simply incapable of processing the number of functions that a full PS3 game runs.

For instance, Hideo Kojima commented on Metal Gear Solid 4 (PS3) that there was more detail in Solid Snakes mustache alone than there was in his entire body on MGS3 (PS2).

Another way to think of it: Say you were to ride your bicycle in a NASCAR race… thats what would happen to your PS2 if you tried to run a PS3 game on it.

DO you expect to connect an external blu-ray player to a ps2? With what graphics card and processor? (including all the other pieces of hardware needed to run a ps3 game) -1
