Sony needs a System-on-a-chip

Idea 17472 | Posted in by | May 10, 2010

Sony could make a SOC out of the PS3 Cell chip. It could power their laptops, handhelds and PSP. Instead of 8 SPE it could have 4. It would be fast, with less power consumption, and efficient.

The trouble with this for laptops would be that since the Cell architecture is so radically different from what is used in computers, the only operating systems that would be able to run on it (without *significant* modification) are the same few custom builds of Linux that ran on the PS3, thereby negating much of the value of a laptop.

Don’t you think they would do that if they could? The PS3 slim is already a more compact, efficient system than the 1st gen system, and it’s still expensive! Just wait for Moore’s Law…

As previously mentioned Linux is the only OS available currently to run on the hardware your talking about. And remember this sony is hell bent on killing linux running on their hardware. Remember the april fool dirmware downgrade? surely you must remember, the one that landed them with no less than 5 enourmous class action lawsuits.
