Make it possible to pay for the rights, through PSN, to copy game discs for any PSone game directly to the PS3′s HDD. Not only convenient, but also prevents piracy from copying games you don’t own.

Pay more? No thanks. We already paid for the game.

And it increases piracy cause you can just sell the game after, or even just rent them

Not exactly, the act of piracy, when it comes to video games, involves making a copy of a game to be played without having to actually own a physical or virtually licensed copy. The whole point of my idea is to make it so that, not only could games be copied straight to the HDD for convenience and faster load times, but also make it possible to simply borrow games from other people, then pay a small premium to Sony to allow that title to be played on the PS3 in this way. Basically, it’s paying for a virtual copy that you’re ripping straight from the discs instead of downloading from the PSN, which would be of benefit to both Sony and the internet subscriber as that’s typically gigabytes of data that does not need to be downloaded.

Piracy is not an issue with regards to my idea since you would be paying to have a copy of the game, weather it was a second copy you own, or one that you borrowed long enough to copy it and return it from where it came (friend, rental, etc.); the owner of the games original license would still be making money from the game. The best part of my idea is that it meets two great ideas both ways… It is already possible to purchase and download some great games, but the biggest problem with the service is that games are released in small numbers and very infrequently, especially when compared to Japanese titles. I, personally, would like to be able to buy games like Xenogears and Vagrant Story, which are already available in Japan, and play them on my PS3 without having to hunt them down on Ebay and spend $30-50 per game when I could be downloading or copying them straight to my PS3 to play them from the HDD.

I know you mean well, but licensing issues make this impossible.

ps1 games can’t be simply ripped like a cd – unless there was software on the ps3 to rip a disc image and use it which is really unlikely to ever happen
ps1 classics are recoded to digital format to make them compatible with the ps3 emulation software .
it’s impossible to simply copy from the disc .
-1 because it’s not practical or possible without changing the ps3 os , and that’ll raise the cost of the system ( to pay for the changes and the r&d to develop it . they’ve already made it so you can buy digital copies or play from disc so don’t expect more `

@5 – The licensing issues are exactly what my idea is all about… Paying the original games developer to allow for a digital copy to be made of their game to another piece of hardware. My idea is not intended to promote piracy, but rather find a balance between everything… The lack of software available to download through PSN, the major piracy issue of simply allowing games to be copied at no cost (if such a feature was ever implemented), and the impossibility of buying new PSone games.

@6 – They could create a program that could be purchased and downloaded from the PSN that could work like this: Run the program, program requests the first disc of a game to be inserted. Insert the disc, it reads the title and assumes the number of discs included with that game, and then starts to rip the first disc. When finished, it requests the next and then the next until finished ripping all. The program would then convert itself to an image mounter to allow the game to be played by the PSone emulator. If you wish to copy another game, you must purchase and download another copy of the program and repeat. Would that not be possible? And cost to develop would not be a problem since the software would have to be paid for anyway, and would only work for one title per purchase/download.

Is it really to mush trouble to stick the disc into the machine?

@FJ110
PS1 games are not encoded so they work because PS1 games on disc work in any PS3 so it’s just as simple as ripping the disk to the PS3, mounting the image & play. RIP.MOUNT.PLAY

Why would i want to pay more than once?

@11 – If you have the original discs, and wish to play from the discs, then by all means do so. My idea is more in favor of those of us who…
A: Do not own the games, but know friends that have them.
B: Do not wish to spend a fortune for the discs through ebay, where most games are now considered collectibles more than anyway.
C: Do not wish to wait months or years for the games to become available for download through PSN, since the population of downloadable titles is coming at an extremely slow pace.
D: Or in the case for those who do own the discs, have plenty of HDD space they would gladly use for something like this, and don’t mind paying a premium to eliminate the load times.

(Whoops! B: was supposed to say “more than anything. But some of the games are pretty expensive, going from $30 to about $100.)

As an alternative to ripping games (which I imagine is fairly difficult and not fool proof, both technically and legally), it’d be nice if the PSN was able to utilize something like Disney’s Blu-Ray Upgrade Program for its PSone Classics games. For Disney’s program, customers provide the proof of purchase for their DVD in exchange for an $8 coupon towards the Blu-Ray version of the same film. I’d love it if I could get a small discount on the digital versions of games I purchased and played to death on the original Playstation–especially now that the PS3 is no longer backwards compatible. That said, I’m sure such a program would be a licensing nightmare.

Although there could be problems with this but it would benefit the gamers who own a substantial PSOne collection and don’t own a PSone or PS2 and can’t afford one at the moment.

SukiNihon | July 11th, 2010 at 9:14 pm
Why? So we can copy discs we own to PSP.
@3: It lets people borrow/rent games, copy them, return/sell them. Piracy.
A simpl 1 month time limit that requires you to recheck the disc would solve this issue

@17: That’s exactly my point! But it’s NOT piracy because you’re PAYING the OWNER of the LICENSE to make a copy of the game discs on you PS3′s HDD. It’s piracy if you’re able to copy the game and no compensation is offered.
Example: a group of 5 friends all own PS3s and one person owns a copy of Final Fantasy VII, a PSone classic. If they could find some way to hack the system and copy it for nothing, no cost to anyone, this would be piracy. Everyone gets it for free.
Example using my idea: Same thing with 5 friends, PS3′s, Final Fantasy VII, etc. Sony would be offering a sort of tool that can be purchased from the PSN store allowing a single PSone game to be copied directly to the HDD. It costs about $10 for the purpose of license fees. Everyone in the group does it. In this case it’s NOT piracy because $50 more was just made off of a game that was sold 10-12 years ago.
The game I chose was a good example as well, since it would be the exact same as buying the game from the PSN store, but it cannot be recovered if deleted and cannot be transferred to a PSP. But think about games like Dragon Quest VII or Xenogears that may never make it to the PSN store.

you could just copy it and give the copy to other people therefore promoting piracy.
if that could be worked out with absolutely no loopholes then it is a somewhat good idea.
it is still basically buying the game twice.
i gave it -1.

@17: this is kind of off topic but that is an idea i had for the ngp. you buy the physical copy and then you save it to your harddrive and you can play your games lets say on a road trip without having to carry all of the games. after a certain time period it cannot be played without “renewing” the “subscription” by starting the game with the physical copy in the device and voila you have another month or so to play your games without the physical copy. and if you sell the games then once your time is up you will either have to delete the game or (and this is stupid) buy the physical media again.
also if you sold your copy and your time is up and your friend has a copy then you can SHARE* with them.
ps. this will be an idea i post tomm. i already posted one today.
*-sharing is not piracy it is sharing.
ie. a dvd can be shared with people but a copy on the internet or on some type of external hard drive is piracy as you are creating another copy noty sharing the same LEGAL copy.

@19: Give the copy to someone how? It’s locked to your system! Didn’t you read my other comments?
The whole point of my idea is you’re paying to create a digital copy of physical media. Can someone please explain to me how this promotes piracy? I thought piracy was the act of making unauthorized copies of media. Paying for the right to copy the game makes it an authorized copy, and anyone else who uses the same discs on their system also pays the premium, so every copy of the disc(s) is authorized, so long as the tool is purchased from the PSN store.
