Support IPv6 & QoS for improved networking

Idea 19245 | Posted in , by | May 26, 2010

Support IPv6 (both PS3 & PSN servers) to directly expose PS3 on internet rather than through NAT+ports. QoS support could also reduce lags for live gaming if high priority is put on critical streams.

IPv6 is the next IP protocol to replace today’s limited IPv4. I say limited because even if we virtually can use a infinite quantity of networks/sub-networks/sub-sub… all these have to be routed inside-out and from outside-in.
To allow these, there is for IPv4 NAT technology, that allow you to own a single IP address and share it in your place with local address. It’s working perfectly for in-out traffic, but for out-in we need to put port forwarding to a single local IP address. i mean, once you decided that your home port 80 for ex is for PS3, you cannot say it’s for your PC. (pb with home web servers, or multiple PS3 in the same house)
Supporting IPv6 would give your home not a single IP, but a total network, which means that each device in your place could be directly connected on Internet and be seen totally from outside. no ports fwd, no dmz, every device with their own public addr.

QoS could also improve things because a download stream is less important than a real time game stream. sharing all kind of streams in your place without priority decrease critical streams performance, and QoS could help.
Especially if this is done in your place and on the PSN.
PS3 could be a leading IPv6+QoS platform.

I’m definitely looking forward to transitioning to IPv6, IPv4 is NOT ideal for Peer-to-Peer connections, IPv6 is the future, especially for games! c’mon Sony, update the PS3 for IPv6 compatibility

Yeap, IPv6 for sure is something that Sony MUST look forward to implement in PS3. As a matter of fact, it is quite shameful that PS3 doesn’t support it since it’s launch date, due to the fact that all important operating systems available at the time PS3 was launched ALREADY supported IPv6 nativaly.

IPv6+QoS would be even better.

IPv6 is going to be essential going forward. Definitely support adding it to all active Sony products.
