NGP – Folding @ Home

Idea 42652 | Posted in , by | February 8, 2011

With the power of the NGP, I think that having F@H would be great to have, I’m sure it could easily be supported since it’s “close” to the PS3s power.

I like this idea. I “Fold” when I can…

Why would I use a portable device to do this? You realize the NGP runs on a battery.

If you plugged it in all the time for folding at home, you’re battery will become less useful over time.

And, no, the NGP has nowhere near the CPU power of the PS3, which is what counts for folding.

Did I mention the requisite internet connection? I can’t imagine the bill if someone ran this on 3G.

Don’t even get me started on this.

That’ll be a big NO.

OR “fold” on your PS3 while your out somewhere on your NGP! Good idea though.

Smaller/shorter WU’s could easily be handled by the NGP. Two to three hour WU’s would probably be more ideal as the battery life wouldn’t be too long, either way, you could simply plug your NGP in and away you go. The projects that the PS3 currently gets are pretty large. Much smaller projects for the NGP wouldn’t be out of the question.

@StealthReborn

You might not understand how Folding works. The PS3 can do it because the Cell processor is so complex. No other home console can do this, and a portable, despite the fact that the NGP will have good graphics (for its small screen size) doesn’t mean it can do powerful number crunching like the Cell can.

Folding at Home on the PS3 is essentially pointless at this point, it’s been vastly surpassed by GPU folding.

The Vita’s fast, but it’s still at best a bit under half the raw processing power of the PS3.
