Software Emulation for PS2 Games

Idea 57248 | Posted in by | July 20, 2012

Even if it were a paid add-on, I’m sure many PS3 owners would be thrilled if they could play PS2 games on the system directly. while software emulation may not be perfect, it’s better than nothing!

It will be really nice now that PS2 games are cheap to buy used at gamestop.

Draza_Vin  |  March 17th, 2010 at 5:51 pm

This could make Sony mad money I hope they know that. The PS2 was the best selling Home console ever. I would kill to have PS2 games again

Kchow23  |  March 17th, 2010 at 5:51 pm

I think PS2 Classics would be just as great

Cxplorer_Qc_Can  |  March 17th, 2010 at 6:05 pm

I really hope Sony make something about this!

Heartlessomen  |  March 17th, 2010 at 6:10 pm

I totally agree with this 100%

…even if Sony did go the $$ route and charged us for it…as long as its not over 5 bucks i’d so be down for it

JFIZZLEBACK  |  March 17th, 2010 at 6:12 pm

this also is coming with premium service i believe, another added feature that will not be free

I got a 60gb model,but recently I’ve purchased a new slim model,and I hope Sony will enable the retro-emulation PS2 for the new PS3 and older systems like the 40 and 80 Go Phats…

I know it’s probably tougher to actually put into working order and everything, but imagine how many people would start buying Playstation 2 classics they’ve always wanted to play if they were on the Playstation network at reasonably priced ($10-15 for normal games, $20 for the best ones) games. This way the old catalogs won’t turn into a way for just Game Stop and other second hand dealers to make money and Sony can turn in a profit from them once again.

DrFMA  |  March 17th, 2010 at 6:29 pm

That is brilliant. Yeah! Backwards Compatibility will get back to PS3,
definitly will go back.

PS3 can do a lot of things, and the backwards compatibility is the missing thing.

“It only does everything…except play ps2 games” I love my ps2 compatible PS3, not to just play ps2 games, but to play them with ease without holding on to old hardware. It’s not like the ps2 components are expensive, the technology is over ten years old, they would be cheap and the chip-set wouldn’t grab too much power. Sony did this to force us to buy ps3 games, instead of just creating games we should want to buy as well as ps3 owners purchasing older ps2 games that they have never experienced before, with that plan you would have people buying 2 different sets of games instead of one, Sony might actually make more money by bringing compatibility back!

LiQuiZoN  |  March 17th, 2010 at 6:36 pm

Give us PS2 BC and upload PS2 games similar to the PS1 games on the store!

We’ll Buy them!

Keep building your Digital Library!

Android66  |  March 17th, 2010 at 6:43 pm

Emulation was removed to lower the price. It is easy to keep a $99 PS2 lying around. I’d rather see upgraded PS2 game collections on Blu-ray (as they did with GOW).

114

sammyk  |  March 17th, 2010 at 6:43 pm

I have a launch 60 gig and played maybe PS2 games on (FFXII & MGS2 & 3)… just for giggles…

Move forward people… just buy a ps2…

Sony focus on more important things like an Avatar builder or something…

115

Senjutsu_Dav  |  March 17th, 2010 at 6:44 pm

Yeah, at least for the best games. Let’s say you begin with emulating the 10 best PS2 games of each years, then 15, 20, 35 etc… After a year you got most of what people want, and that is: A way to play PS2 games on our PS3 (any PS3 version).

I have a PS2 also, but it’s not working anymore, so it would be really nice to add the support. Thx

I being a decently responsible person kept all of my PS2 games. I would love nothing more than to play them on the greatest Sony console yet. However, I do not want to pay for them again. There is no market for that anyways. Backwards compatibility via software even for limited games would be better than paying again.

Carl-G  |  March 17th, 2010 at 6:58 pm

So far 1,901 voted not to get this?

ARE YOU LOT MAD! ;D
Why in hell don’t you want PS2 playback on PS3 for? I don’t get it really why people vote not to have it? Don’t forget the past ;D
I have 70+ PS2 games and i would LOVE to play them on my PS3:Slim ;P

119

Charrsasaurus  |  March 17th, 2010 at 7:02 pm

Oh god please do this. I never had the money to be able to afford a Ps2 when they came out, I saved and saved for my ps3 and it would be the icing on my Playstation Loving cake if I could play Ps2 games on it.

120

GameAngry  |  March 17th, 2010 at 7:04 pm

And this is why they got rid of the ps2 BC: so they can resell games they already made their money on (pure profit) at 5x the price you’ll find them on ebay.

This shouldn’t be a big priority…
But I’m sure it is.

likedatkilla  |  March 17th, 2010 at 7:15 pm

PS2 on PS3
PS2 on PS3
PS2 on PS3

Ever since my 60 gig died and I got a slim instead of risking fixing the 60 and it breaking again (I have friends who had that happen) we just got a slim and I miss that I can’t play any of my ps2 games…. :(

123

clupula668  |  March 17th, 2010 at 7:34 pm

Even though I have a BC 60-gig, I think this is absolutely necessary. I have thought about upgrading to a slim, but I like playing my PS2 games. I don’t think many people would mind paying for PS2 software emulation, really, as whatever you’d charge, it’d be cheaper than a PS2. Of course, it should be free, but if that can’t work out, as I said, I don’t think people would mind a one-time fee.

124

eddy223  |  March 17th, 2010 at 7:36 pm

This is smart because some games that are “rare” or whatever can cost $40+ which is ridiculous for a used ps2 game nowadays. If games were available for purchase on the playstation store they might even be at reasonable prices,
and if you don’t want to pay for the games again, then don’t. Buy games you haven’t played yet.
That’s just my opinion tho
:)

DarkRecoil  |  March 17th, 2010 at 7:41 pm

sony have already all but confirmed this for E3.

126

DarkRecoil  |  March 17th, 2010 at 7:43 pm

if duplicate was merged with the other one this would top idea

127

Einhander138  |  March 17th, 2010 at 7:49 pm

Absolutely unnecessary.

DLC of *any* kind should *not* be a priority at all.

128

seadogpirate  |  March 17th, 2010 at 7:50 pm

please add this and i would like more backwards support for the 80gb 2007 models i feel like Sony has neglected support of the 2007 ps3 80gb models users like me

129

Squished  |  March 17th, 2010 at 7:55 pm

I vote Yes for PS2 emulation, or at least fix and return MY 80 GB BC PS3.

130

killer4you  |  March 17th, 2010 at 8:03 pm

This would be great to have, I had a 60GB ps3 an loved that feature, but i really wanted to slim ps3 so i sold 60GB ps3 an got wanted even though im bumbed about that one feature not being available other thn that I love my slim alot more.

131

Enforcer_X  |  March 17th, 2010 at 8:08 pm

Sony said not a lot of people wanted this … Well I think we have proved them wrong!

132

Hauntedpixel  |  March 17th, 2010 at 8:14 pm

I finally got around to buying another new PS2 a few weeks ago and it was actually really hard to find one. I was shocked how a lot of Gamestops and stores in general were dumping the system finally.

That being said, even with a new PS2, I’d still love the option to pop my PS2 games into my PS3 slim from time to time.

133

favian  |  March 17th, 2010 at 8:32 pm

i need a 1tb for my ps3, especially if they start selling ps2 games on the psn store. so many great ps2 games went unnoticed that could get some more recognition on psn. (neo contra, clock tower series, godhand, haunting ground, rule of rose, silent hill: shattered memories, to name a few)

134

paradise132  |  March 17th, 2010 at 8:32 pm

I agreed with this idea because I have a lot of PS2 games that I want to play like Silent Hill 2 or Jak and Dexter.

135

rpgki  |  March 17th, 2010 at 8:39 pm

Oh yeah, plz bring the backwards compatiability, this is an awesome idea, and is not of the topic but also to bring more PS1 classic games every week, best of lucks for your future ideas

136

Razor210  |  March 17th, 2010 at 8:39 pm

Y’all should have bought a 60 gig.

If you want to play old games, go get a PS2 instead of spending time on this.

137

CDprofessional  |  March 17th, 2010 at 8:40 pm

I have the launch 60gb PS3 and I’ve played like 2 PS2 games on it since I’ve had the system. I dunno, I haven’t really seen b/c as all that big of a deal. It’s a cool feature but I’d rather Sony spend the time and resources on other more important features. I mean, doesn’t everyone here have a PS2 already if they REALLY need to play a PS2 game?

138

ReIysis  |  March 17th, 2010 at 8:43 pm

This is all I’ve wanted. I have an 80gb backwards compatible PS3 (that I bought with that functionality in mind). Support for it just dropped when the newer models came out. There have been no new updates for any new PS2 releases. Yes, I could buy a PS2, but I bought my BC PS3 specifically for the ability to play my PS2 games.

Honestly, if my PS3 breaks, I’m not getting a slim. I’d gladly pay a premium for a used 60 or 80gb model on eBay. This is money Sony is losing. Honestly, dropping support for newer consoles is your call, but to stop supporting a headline functionality for a console model almost immediately after its release… well, that seems like bad business.

139

bloodytaste  |  March 17th, 2010 at 8:43 pm

I have a backwards compatible PS3 and I love being able to play ps2 games on it. I’m still even buying ps2 games because of it. If my ps3 wasn’t backwards compatible I probably still wouldn’t be buying old games to help fill your pockets. :D

140

StormBrkr216  |  March 17th, 2010 at 8:43 pm

the old classics should be emulated. Not just the household names. you have classics like Otogi, altered beast, and any final fantasy that ever came out!

141

Hawt  |  March 17th, 2010 at 8:44 pm

I couldn’t believe it when my PS3 broke and I had to pay EXTRA to get a refurb of my 60gb PS3 just so I could play my PS1 and PS2 game.

Way to screw over the people who supported you in the beginning.

It’s laughable that you would take away memory card slots, PS1 and PS2 backwards compatibility and two usb ports and act like you’re doing customers a favor by offering them a gimped system that is a little smaller and has a bigger hard drive.

It just sucks that Sony’s corporate greed for sales on digital PS2 and PS1 classics on the PSN Store killed the one of coolest features of the PS3.

If this does come back I’m sure it will be part of the premium service that has been rumored to come around.

143

ChocoboJoseph  |  March 17th, 2010 at 8:45 pm

holy crap, yes I want ps2 backwards compatibility. Don’t care if it looks terrible at a higher resolution or if it has occasional slow down, I want backwards compatibility for my ps2 collection.

144

RIN_Beertjes  |  March 17th, 2010 at 8:49 pm

definitely want this,, first because i want to replay classics like MGS 2 and 3 again, second because the PS2 doesnthave HDMI support

145

MiguelAMX  |  March 17th, 2010 at 8:50 pm

I would want sony to finish up with PS1 and PSP titles before even touching this. Really why add onto the load ?

146

Dratizz  |  March 17th, 2010 at 8:52 pm

I have never had the desire to play a single PS2 title. I feel like this is something that should be placed way down the list of priorities.

147

ACandJS  |  March 17th, 2010 at 8:55 pm

Sony think of it this way sales would go through the roof, if BacPac to PS2 happens. PS1 and PS2 titles combined IS the best library of games EVER. Imagine if that was one the most powerful gaming console out…This should be self-explanatory this needs to happen. It is no longer a want.

148

FPlus  |  March 17th, 2010 at 8:55 pm

Yes, I agree it should be added, even if its a PSN downloadable paid add-on… I would pay upto $30 for it so i can play Legacy Of Kain series in its entirety. And NFS HP2 and BLACK and shadow of the colossus.

149

jfkgoblue  |  March 17th, 2010 at 8:56 pm

not the most important idea on the platform(I like most already have a PS2), but it would be nice

150

NintendoTim  |  March 17th, 2010 at 8:57 pm

One of the many reasons why I still cling to my 60GB launch PS3, fretting the day it dies.

Do it, and I just might by the slim. Keyword = Might.
