Even if it were a paid add-on, I’m sure many PS3 owners would be thrilled if they could play PS2 games on the system directly. while software emulation may not be perfect, it’s better than nothing!

This would be appreciated. Though I already have a PS2, I would like if the PS3 was backwards compatible. Every other system on the market is.

This would be cool because there are lots of PS3 owners out there who started off with a PS2 who would want to play their old games on their PS3s.

I’d Pay 20$ for good software emulation, if it were that easy. as far as i’m concerned i’d be paying for programmers to code something just like any other game.

Great idea. I have a slim PS3 and that can’t play PS3 games. It’d be better if it can be free because a lot of PS3 users (like me) had a PS3 in the past (like me). And since PS2 games are, like, less than $10, it’d be easier. Come on, Sony. Please implement this idea. A free add-on to play PS3 games on whatever model PS3 we have!

And there we go: this is why Sony’s gaming division is losing money. Instead of doing something thoroughly, and building their own brand, they knock themselves over trying to hype the next fad in the marketing arts in the short term.
Doesn’t work.

this is also why A LOT of people get Xbox 360, for the backwards compatibility.

Sony hasn’t added PS2 BC back to PS3′s because they want to try and have their paying consumers rebuy games they already paid for by releasing PS2 Classics on the PlayStation Store. That is nothing but greedy, completely anti consumer and showing your consumers you don’t care about them. Keep adding on to those negative points Sony.
Also, what happened to cross voice chat on Share?

@iiGeTMoNeY23: Actually, that would be fine by me, if they actually did offer the entire catalogue. If all the ps2 games were available online. But they knew on beforehand that they would never be able to do that – just like with the ps1 classics – and they still chose that solution.

I see some improvement on that feature. Yet I kept my Old Fat PS2 for a souvenir and old friend to visit from time to time to play games with.

Would be nice if Sony is able to add this in, if possible and not too late. Having quite a big collection of PlayStation 2 retail disc games, would be great not having my PlayStation 2 Slim hooked up. Very much enjoy the PlayStation 3, already has some neat features I’m enjoying. But this would be the biggest surprise I would ever want implemented into the console.
Like I said, if it’s possible, please make it happen. Those that went through the PS2′s generation of games and kept them, would love this! It’s already happening, but those that didn’t play the PS2 back then, purchasing the PS2 Classics on the PlayStation Store would be great for them to enjoy some of the best games. I’m all for Backward compatibility as I enjoyed the PS2 for playing PSone games. Make this happen Sony.

I would love for this to happen. I loved my Playstation 2 and to be honest my older games don’t get much attention anymore. But they would if they could be used on a PS3!

FROM A CONSUMERS STAND POINT THIS SOUNDS GREAT, BUT WILL IT HAPPEN? I DOUBT IT, WHY?
WELL BECAUSE THERES NO MONEY IN IT FOR SONY, LOL THEY RATHER MAKE A NEW “HD” RELEASE WITH TROPHY SUPPORT INSTEAD WHICH IS TOTAL GARBAGE IF U ASK ME, GREAT IDEA THO, EVEN THOUGH IT IS FAR FETCHED

The motherboard on my 80GB backwards compatible PS3 fried out recently and I am suffering from the yellow light of death. As there are no current models available that are backwards compatible, I am going to buy a USED 80GB PS3 to replace the one that I have that no longer works. I would love to upgrade to a newer model with more harddrive space, but as I still have PS & PS2 games that I still play, I have decided that I am not willing to lose my backwards compatibility in order to upgrade to the latest and greatest model. My suggestion to SONY would be to release a new model with loads of hard drive space and make that model backwards compatible so all us gamers with older games can upgrade our PS3′s if and when we choose.

this would be awesome…i have about 4-5 huge cd cases worth of ps2 games and i think ( in my opinion ) it would be very wise to bring back bc to the new ps3 consoles due to the fact that you have so many people asking for it, there are some ps3 consoles that arent able to play those games ( unfortunately mine is 1 of them ) and it breaks my heart that they did away with it in the 1st place…why would you do that? i understand the hardware is quite expensive, but nowadays you have a lot of emulator software out there…ive got a dotnes emulator on my laptop for old nintendo games but would love to have a ps2 emulator for my ps3…it would be a very wise choice to do that, plus it would make playstation even more of a success and give them an even bigger edge on the market, just my opinion though lol

For those saying that this is why so many get the XBox 360, that is a gamer logic myth that is invalid, and here’s why. I know you’re saying “but… but… but… .but… Microsoft as swell guys, and Sony are meanie, greedy, poopie heads!! They didn’t drop backward compatibility!!”. The last update for backward compatibility on the 360 was in…
NOVEMBER 2007! That’s right, Microsoft dropped it soon after Sony, and quite unceremoniously. Don’t believe me?

How many of you are going to start demanding they restore it, and start saying “C’MON MICROSOFT!” now?

Here’s my issue, I’ve got PS2 hard copy games that I don’t even know if they are going to be released onto the PSN or not – for an example – Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne – I’m not even sure if that’s going to be released despite the love of it and that it would be perfect to have all 3 games to my access, otherwise I have to count on the game company to make a decision… and unfortunately I may never see that decision made.
Also my computer rig isn’t good enough to run it, so I turn to my PS3 because I love it and would love to continue to love it by making this happen.

tbh, i think you are better off without PS2 games. If you play PS2 games on HD TV, they do look good.
2242
NinjaBLMMoogle | September 26th, 2012 at 3:22 am
it will never happen, they would rather sell you the game over again then let you play the game you bought 4 years ago and then your going to have to throw a fit to get it on the store

Rood idea, but I think it is not possible for the reader game PS3™, because that’s what has the PS2 Classics.

Ok first off, there is a lot of things that people will say they don’t agree with the way Sony is handling certain things.
A) Your able to play PSX Games on the PS3 but not PS2 games.
B) We need a better XMB screen.
C) The ability to organize the download list to make it easier for the customer to navigate among the downloads
The list goes on and on and on. This is the best they can do folks. I agree with a lot of what others have to say when it comes to making the system better. But this is why you keep all your old systems and don’t sell them knowing that something like this will happen. I hate it when people say the xbox 360 etc is better then PS3. A system is a system. Its going to have pros as well as cons. Stop freaking trolling and be happy with what you got. Stop acting like a 2 year old. Half the stuff people have suggested aren’t going to be put into action cause either A) they are too lazy OR B) they can’t do anything at this time. But for the most part I’m going to bet my money on A.
Needless to say. If you don’t like the way Sony is handling your request. Then go find a company that will better suit your needs.

lonewhitewolf1 | October 8th, 2012 at 10:38 pm
why dont people realize that the emotion engine is hard to emulate? not even a pc can get a proper ps2 emulator that works 100 percent! and if a pc that is 100 times more powerful than a ps2 cant, theres no way in hell that a ps3 can unless sony changes the game to run on cell processor which TAKES ALOT OF TIME and that is why we dont have alot of ps2 classics up.
