Remove or expand the 100 icons limit on live area

Idea 63706 | Posted in , by | October 15, 2012

Live area install at 100 icons, but counting up all titles I already have more than 100 of them and sometimes the vita locks the install but there is still space available on memory card.

I already submitted a folder proposal months ago which would be a better solution that just extending the icon limit. the share blog still hasn’t got around to posting it yet though.

….how in the hell do you actually have 100 icons? I’m sure they made that limit thinking that no sane person would actually have 100 icons in their Live area.

Downvoted for app hoarders.

Between Vita, PS1, Minis, Mobile, and PSP games it can fill up quick. I don’t understand why it would be limited in the first place. More space, more sales right? Also, it would be nice to have a folder type system just to organize things more to my taste.

Again, I’ve also suggested a folder “Album” option to be added, similar to what’s on the PS3, but with the option of keeping your game s there or make them into a folder.

folder and extension are both great ideas, but this just seems, how do i say, simplerer.

All 10 pages of my Vita are full. An 11th page was there that told me I had an item waiting to be added so I had to delete something first. So I deleted something and ended up with the Email app.

Yay! Something else I don’t need that I can’t delete that takes up space for the games I want.

Definitely the 100 icon limit should be fixed. Just the standard system icons and free apps like youtube, skype etc. and the free downloadable games use big part of that. Then install some minis, ps1, psp games and demos and you are out of icon space without even installing any vita game yet. Also it is hard to manage too, say, put demos in demo folder, minis games into separate folder. But no such option exists, The PSP xbar had no such problems, no limits and could group into folders.

AV-X14  |  December 6th, 2012 at 6:36 pm

A higher limit and folders are absolutely necessary. Also, we don’t need to see icons of cartridge games when they are not in the system.
Looking at all the down votes, I don’t understand why so many people want their system to be limited so severely! I could easily put 150 things on my system, and given that you have to be connected to the internet to copy/transfer things, I’d much rather keep them on my system than go through the trouble of recopying things when I shouldn’t need to.

I agree with this wholeheartedly. This is one of the better ideas that I have yet to see implemented. This has ALWAYS been a problem of some type or another for any PS3 and PSVita alike. With the PS Vita it is the bubbles and the saves. With the PS3 it is the baffling notion that you can organize music and video alphabetically but not your videogames, basically the entirety of the XMB interface for PS3 and PS Vita alike need some serious functionality overhaul. Yet every time they are upgraded it is cosmetic in nature. Frankly I am sick of it. Focus on fixing your functionality first Sony.

They’d have to re-design the vita’s interface just to accomodate you on this. I seriously doubt this’ll ever happen. You can only have 10 icons on the screen (on each page). I don’t see them making the icons smaller so you can fit more, although that’s ONE possibility. But they’d have to remove the limit of ten pages you can make. And if you make enough pages… the dots on the side showing what page you’re on would eventually go off the screen. So they’d have to change those dots into something else like…. a normal scroll bar.

Personally I think no page limit and a scroll bar instead of the dots would be good……. but I dont’ see Sony putting that much effort into changing the interface like that and the firmware.

@15
it’s not hard to redesign the interface , just need a fw update . look at the ps3 , the old xmb design before fw 3.0 and the one after were huge changes adding categories , new icons , menu options and more and that is also easy to do on the vita , it’s also needed on the vita as anyone that owns one and downloads a lot of games knows it fills up really fast
If you also owned a ps3 or psp before you probably have a lot of minis , psp or ps1 classics already so adding those to your psp can use several pages already then you want to buy psvita games ( or get them on ps plus ) and ps mobile games adding to 100 in a few months easily – in 2 months I already have 7 pages used on my vita just from past purchases and a few new games plus some playstation mobile games

Yeah they need to change it. The 3ds had a similar problem when it first came out, and nintendo did an update to add folders. There’s no reason why sony couldnt do something similar.

I wish we could remove the unnecessary icons..

jts2082  |  February 11th, 2013 at 10:29 pm

With Playstation Plus people will need this, how about folders?

21

adray69  |  February 13th, 2013 at 11:12 pm

1/5 of the 100 apps are taken up by mandatory apps that can’t be grouped/deleted. You give us all this space but no way to get passed 10 pages.

eezygoing  |  February 28th, 2013 at 12:35 am

i personally liked the xmb (xross media bar) better

Summun_Vita  |  March 13th, 2013 at 8:27 am

Why have this limitation? is ridiculous.

24

bwhitlat  |  April 23rd, 2013 at 8:16 pm

I have filled up my 32GB for almost 6 months now. If you have had a PSP from day 1 and PS Plus from day 1, you nave probably 30+ ps1 games, plus 30+ old ps mini games, plus all the free new vita and psp and ps mobile games out there with ps plus. Then all your previous purchases and new purchases take up a bubble and then all the carts you own that you put in your vita have a bubble. 100 bubbles is too small. There should be unlimited amount of bubbles, where the only error should occur when trying to install or download something when the actual memory card gets full, not by some arbitrary amount of bubbles.

25

bwhitlat  |  April 23rd, 2013 at 8:18 pm

Since my Vita can’t show anymore than 100 bubbles, I can’t download anymore games or demos or anything until I choose to delete something first. Then when the Playstation download load list isn’t sortable or searchable and very hard and slow to navigate when you get to over 250 or more pages of content, its a nightmare having to find the game you just deleted if you want to play it again and download it back on the vita. Get rid of the 100 app limit and please provide larger memory cards beyond 32GB more in the 100GB plus range.

I thought the folder issue fixed the 100 icon issue, but it clearly hasn’t. I don’t want to have to delete all my downloaded Vita Games or cartridge dlc everytime I get a new game for my vita. I have well over 150 games and enough memory space to put them on my vita but the icon limit makes me stop at 100, even with created folders. At the moment I have to delete all my Playstation Mobile games just to put my Ps Vita games on my system with no minis, no psp games and no ps1 games. I just think it’s dumb if there is not an issue of memory. My 32GB Memory card has the space, The Vita just cant hold the icons. I hope in the next update the icon limit is removed and the amount of screens is set like the iPhone/ ipod touch, or they just create an app drawer so you can keep everything on your system at once without having to delete and re-download all the time.

Up the limit! :(

Also, has this blog not been updated in the last year or so?

Hey I understand the concern for wanting to have more than already is possible. I didnt read all of the comment so this might have already been said… What SlyCooperFan100 mentioned is probably the case. As you can imagine in order to develope something you first must determine what the limits are then build around that. Same as when contructing or building anything else really.

ElektroDragon  |  November 18th, 2013 at 2:20 pm

I just got a 64GB memory card to stop having to swap two 32GB cards, and to my horror after merging them with plenty of space left, I am told I have to delete a whopping 17 games!! This is ridiculous. Items in FOLDERS SHOULD NOT COUNT towards the limit! Better yet, why have a limit at all? At least increase it to 200.

32

shibbydibbybibby  |  November 27th, 2013 at 9:12 am

@ElektroDragon, ditto here, just got the 64gb card, well actually since the gb# doesnt really equate to whats declared i have a 59gb card. now its down to 2gb roughly. you got 2 cards prior and thought you were upgrading only to really be downgrading. sony provided people folders without implementing the other grievance, i.e. icon limit. my icon limit is at a teetering 95 and i still have games i need to install.

the people who havent hit the limit or never will have a this “deal with it” attitude. its counter productive. this problem is for those who bought memory cards that shouldnt have any limit as to how much data we want to utilize. even at 64gb, i say give me more memory. even at 100 icons, i say give me another 100. people saying they dont have a problem with it are of no help to fixing this. we who want this fixed are being told to basically live with a flawed/limited icon system.

33

shibbydibbybibby  |  November 27th, 2013 at 9:13 am

anyone who tells someone how they should manage their memory really isnt addressing what we want fixed. I utilize my memory to the fullest. i dont jimmy-rig it with workarounds. give me a petabit and ill aim to fill it. this was a problem for people with 32gb cards. whats it gonna be like for people like us who now have the 64gb cards. with the 64gb cards becoming a new standard, this 100 icon limit is going to be detrimental to the vita. glossing over it and suggesting a “deal with it, i do” attitude has no relevance to people who want it fixed. this discussion isnt for people who made do or likewise are indifferent to our problem.

its not even 100 icons, its 85. while the 15 undeletable icons arent all superfluous, some of us would prefer tossing out quite a few of them.

to go beyond is as wrong as to fall short.

34

Tron2979  |  December 3rd, 2013 at 5:02 pm

They should definitely increase the icon limit, or do away with it completely. And if they insist on having a limit, we should be able to delete the “mandatory” apps.

I’ve hit 100 icons on a 32GB with a bit of space left over, so I can’t imagine anyone taking advantage of a 64GB. What’s the point if you can’t utilize the storage?? I WANT to buy more games, why is Sony making it harder to do that?

35

biblioman212  |  December 5th, 2013 at 2:00 pm

Agreed with the idea, and just use a folder system, or scroll through however many pages of games you have.

36

starnomad_  |  January 24th, 2014 at 5:01 am

I agree, I am not paying for an expensive memory card to be limited on how much bubbles I have.

37

shibbydibbybibby  |  January 28th, 2014 at 5:54 am

how on earth are people downvoting this? what is the argument to keep it as is?

there are only pros to eliminating/extending the limit.

there are zero cons!

sony has made no mention of why the limit is in place. i.e. nothing to be negative if the limit was lifted.

these downvotes are by selfish human beings. theyd be clueless if the limit was extended but hate on the idea because it suits them be intolerant of positive and constructive change.

shame on them all.

Good news, the icon limit has been raised to 500 in firmware 3.10.

41

TomySakazaki  |  April 21st, 2014 at 9:08 am

And I think that 500 is a good limit for now, if Sony could stop bloating the system with unecessary icons “shortcuts” it would be better.
