Enhance PS4 video support

Idea 71374 | Posted in by | May 20, 2014

The PS4 has amazing hardware. What it lacks is media friendly software. At a minimum we need what the PS3 had [in terms of] video: MP4/AVI. Ideally we’d get 4K-HEVC/MKV/ FLAC support.

Update: We have edited this idea in order to focus on video playback and simplify the voting process. CD audio support is now a separate idea. PS4 currently supports MP3s via USB.

Update 2: This feature is now available using the PS4 Media Player application, released during E3 2015.

If I were Shu Yoshida, I would make this a top priority! Honestly people, what were you thinking when you released the PS4 without the ability to play music files? Even my teapots can play mp3s today!

zalwelgoedgaan  |  May 21st, 2014 at 3:25 am

PS3 and Vita can do custom soundtracks (if the game allows it), there’s no reason why a powerful machine like the PS4 can’t do that already.

xLew--  |  May 21st, 2014 at 3:34 am

voted +1 for this it needs to be done!

illutionz  |  May 21st, 2014 at 4:53 am

On the same note as the other suggestion about Spotify app on PS4, I upvoted this idea as I want my PS4 to be the end all be all entertainment machine in my living room.

Having native MKV support might be a little tough but this can be alleviated with having DLNA support of some sort that way we can stream any of our content into the box.

satam55  |  May 21st, 2014 at 9:15 am

Yes, I would also like to see support for the Bluetooth Media remote controls that were released for the PS3 & native DLNA Player support.

satam55  |  May 21st, 2014 at 9:16 am

I also think there should be a Sony Walkman app.

madduey  |  May 21st, 2014 at 9:16 am

DLNA renderer/player would be a big plus here

JollipopUK  |  May 21st, 2014 at 10:31 am

DLNA support, plus support to play back MKV’s and the multitude of other music and video formats out there.

ObeseGymnast  |  May 21st, 2014 at 11:47 am

Just give it the media features the ps3 has had for years and I would be satisfied. The lack of these features was surprising to me.

Thallwynd  |  May 21st, 2014 at 11:57 am

This is absolutely the one thing I want to see happen on the PS4. DLNA is by far the feature I use the most for my PS3 and Xbox360, and when I found out the PS4 would not have it I almost did not purchase one. However because Microsoft bungled things with the Xbox One I decided I would get it even without the support (specifically since many posts online seemed to hint that PS4 would be getting it) I would get much more use out of my PS4 if it would support video streaming from my PC.

fourtwenty2009  |  May 21st, 2014 at 12:46 pm

This is HIGH PRIORITY for me and a lot of my friends. I can’t believe Sony doesn’t have this ready yet.

PRO7IFIC  |  May 21st, 2014 at 1:06 pm

Gamers around the world have embraced the PS4 as their next generation gaming console, why not respond to the overwhelming support from gamers with a much more extensive media support? Thanks in advance Sony!

pullmyfinger4581  |  May 21st, 2014 at 1:20 pm

@yosp said he would add mp3 playback in games in a future update on twitter…. He just needs to follow threw now and do it. Music unlimited sucks and I don’t want to have to pay for a spotify account. Just let me load mp3 from a flash drive to the system then to any game I want. I can’t believe this is not done yet.

chucky87  |  May 21st, 2014 at 1:42 pm

able to play bluray 3d mkv video and audio flac would be great

erbkaiser  |  May 21st, 2014 at 1:53 pm

This MUST include DLNA (network streaming) support.

And MKV is the most widely used format not supported, so adding it would be the logical thing to do.

Gresstopp  |  May 21st, 2014 at 4:03 pm

My PS4 is collecting dust because of the lack og DNLA. I still use my PS3. I reealy wud like to be able to put up my ps4 insted!

Budd-Monster1  |  May 21st, 2014 at 4:24 pm

There should be support for DLNA on this next gen system, the PS4 should support all music and video formats, the PS4 should do everything the previous PS3 system could do and more and it should be made available now, the PS4 seems to be missing lots of features of its predecessor which actually makes the PS4 a downgrade from last gen rather than an upgrade, DLNA should have been included in the PS4 on day one of launch!

coolhs1  |  May 21st, 2014 at 5:22 pm

i really love to add my mp3 to the ps4 some kind of mp3 support would be nice

sibbor  |  May 21st, 2014 at 6:07 pm

Would love improved file extension and codec support, for audio, picture and video files. Also improving the picture viewer, the video viewer (PS3 version is slimmer, quicker and more fluent).

Why not slim down Music Unlimited to and add offline playing of music as well as local MP3 files?

Malcolm30  |  May 21st, 2014 at 10:03 pm

Add the ability to play all video and audio formats.the ability to attach an external USB hard drive to store files and save games and game data to would be amazing. Also allow users to connect their own bluetooth headsets that they own. I have an LG headset that the machine won’t recognize. I would love to be able to watch 3D movies as well.

Killerbean1989  |  May 22nd, 2014 at 2:11 am

DLNA needs to added ASAP! Can’t believe such basic functionality has been left out. Currently I’m using my PS3 more (and I’m not talking about gaming), yet I’ve got a shiny new PS4 that can’t do such basic things. Come on Sony, what are we missing here?

kidtrunk  |  May 22nd, 2014 at 3:06 am

We need DNLA Support.

OMG sony Wake UP !! I’m waiting DNLA to buy ur PS4

madjako  |  May 22nd, 2014 at 3:51 am

There must be FLAC and MKV !
Any tv can read MKV so why not a top notch media center ?

ElmagnifcoBZH  |  May 22nd, 2014 at 7:37 am

I won’t buy a PS4 until it have, at least, the same basics feature of the PS3. And a real media center is the basic!

lateralex  |  May 22nd, 2014 at 8:50 am

I think the PS4 should have all the local streaming capabilities of something like a Boxee. That means support for all codecs, MKV’s, etc. I am a bit surprised this doesn’t already exist…

TyrantII  |  May 22nd, 2014 at 9:04 am

FLAC supported media player would be very, very nice since they dropped SACD support…

mythoc24  |  May 22nd, 2014 at 10:38 am

mkv(1080p/3d suport) is a must for a console of the PREVIOUS generation. This feature should be working from day 1 on a NEXT GENERATION console like PS4. Anyway there is still time to make up for this!

twodoggys  |  May 22nd, 2014 at 11:03 am

i thought it was going to come out with media support, since the old gen had that, hopefully sony can implemented soon.

StealthTaco  |  May 22nd, 2014 at 11:56 am

I sold my PS3 2 days before my PS4 had come in the mail because I assumed (I know that was stupid to do) that the PS4 would have the same media capabilities of the PS3. Now I have no way to play media files at my fiancee’s house (I used to bring my PS3 over all the time). It’s pretty annoying. I’d really like to see these capabilities back on the PS4, more than any other proposed feature at the moment.

JAMccaughran  |  May 22nd, 2014 at 1:55 pm

DLNA support is a must! The only reason I still have my PS3 still hooked up to my main media area and not my secondary one is because of the PS4’s lack of DLNA support.

The fact that my older less powerful gaming system accomplishes this and my newer more powerful one doesn’t is pretty troubling!

I would like to see this feature instituted sooner, rather than later.

alexjmills  |  May 22nd, 2014 at 4:34 pm

Completely agree, I was quite disappointed this had not been a priority as ps3 was fantastic for this.

permadi  |  May 23rd, 2014 at 1:10 pm

DLNA and 3D bluray please?

I understand that Sony needs to make money from video/music streaming but please remember those services are not available for all countries

Azuske  |  May 28th, 2014 at 12:46 am

I don’t think that this should be top priority. This console is advertised to be A PRIORITY GAMING CONSOLE. After all the gaming related functions have been added and fixed then maybe they should look into media functions but as of now this should be last on the list of things to add.

AmUnRa17  |  June 3rd, 2014 at 11:30 am

Azuske, THIS^^

The PS4 is A GAMECONSOLe formost,

Al that other mediastuff, sorry but i have many devices in my house, that do all that that. My PC my iPad my iPhone my mediacenter my DTS system.

For me the PS4 is A gameconsole, and thans what it is.

Ghosting777  |  June 3rd, 2014 at 10:14 pm

Media above all else, this was set to be my media hub, now it’s collecting dust. Customizable interface, wallpaper, Mp3 DLNA…
It is beyond disappointing this wasn’t released with at least as many features if not more then the PS3 as expected Music unlimited is a potato, that you have to subscribe to. Come on Sony, if you listen closely you can hear your consumer base slipping away.

Senjutsu_Dav  |  June 4th, 2014 at 8:37 am

I will not buy a PS4 until it can stream DLNA content and the same file types the PS3 does. And FRANKLY, adding MKV to the list would be a lot better already. Till then, I’ll play on PS3, on my new Wii (I had to do two JRPGs on the system), or I won’t play, but I won’t play PS4…

fourtwenty2009  |  June 6th, 2014 at 3:16 pm

The more time players spend on the PS4 and not on other media devices, the better it is for Sony right?

The more Sony listens to its customers the better it is for Sony right?

Please add MKV 1080p support and MP3/FLAC support in the next possible update. Thanks!

inkubux  |  June 11th, 2014 at 7:35 am

DLNA support is a must for any connected devices theses days. It’s a shame that a 35$ chromecast has better media support than my 400$ PS4.

APudgyPiggy  |  June 11th, 2014 at 9:37 am

The PS4 should have USB media support if it wants to maintain its edge over the Xbox One. At this point in the game it’s basically an expected feature. What I would absolutely LOVE is to see PS4 support game saving/installing on an external drive. This would make life so much easier when I fill up my HDD, which will happen FAST. PLEASE come out with an update to support this feature. I switched from Xbox to PlayStation because I have more faith in you guys. Please don’t make me regret my decision.

phenapha  |  June 11th, 2014 at 9:47 am

I wish to have mp3/music support and 3d support.

Tango69er  |  June 11th, 2014 at 12:01 pm

This is hands-down my biggest gripe with the system. Please fix this ASAP. I cannot believe that you would remove key features already implemented on your previous console from it’s successor.

I use my consoles for all of my TV media-related needs. Or at least I used to… Words cannot express how disappointed I was when I first brought home my PS4 and tried to play a video file off of a flash drive, having assumed that it would be able to do so out of the box just like it’s older brother the PS3.

Sadly I still have to use my Xbox 360 for this purpose as it has more features than my PS4 currently does…
